It is also used for preventing or treating chronic hives. It may also be used to treat certain conditions as determined by your doctor that may not be listed in the professional package insert. Zyrtec is an antihistamine. It works by blocking the action of histamine and reduces the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Do NOT use Zyrtec if:
