Brand Name: Zyflo

Zileuton is used for:

Preventing and treating chronic asthma. It should not be used to treat acute asthma attacks.

Do NOT use Zileuton if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Zileuton
  • you have liver disease or increased liver enzyme levels
  • if you are taking astemizole, pimozide, or terfenadine

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Zileuton :

Some medical conditions may interact with Zileuton . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a history of hepatitis or other liver problems (eg, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine)
  • if you drink alcohol

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Zileuton . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), calcium channel blockers (eg, amlodipine), cisapride, cyclosporine, H1 antagonists (eg, astemizole, terfenadine), pimozide , or theophyllines because side effects may be increased by Zileuton

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Zileuton may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Zileuton :

Use Zileuton as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Zileuton may be taken with or without food.
  • Zileuton comes with an additional patient leaflet. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Zileuton refilled.

  • Continue to take Zileuton even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
  • It may take several weeks for Zileuton to work fully. Do not stop using Zileuton without checking with your doctor.
