Zegerid Powder

Zegerid Powder is used for:

Treating ulcers, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or inflammation of the esophagus. It is also used for the prevention of stomach bleeding in critically ill patients. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Zegerid Powder is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by blocking acid production in the stomach.

Do NOT use Zegerid Powder if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Zegerid Powder
• you have low blood calcium levels or metabolic alkalosis
• you are taking an HIV protease inhibitor (eg, ritonavir)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Zegerid Powder:

Some medical conditions may interact with Zegerid Powder. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have liver problems, other stomach problems (eg, tumors), a kidney disease known as Bartter syndrome, low potassium levels, acid-base imbalance, or a breathing condition called respiratory alkalosis

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Zegerid Powder. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam), carbamazepine, cilostazol, cyclosporine, or hydantoins (eg, phenytoin) because their actions and side effects may be increased by Zegerid Powder
• HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir) because effectiveness may be decreased by Zegerid Powder

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Zegerid Powder may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Zegerid Powder:

Use Zegerid Powder as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Take Zegerid Powder on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before a meal.
• Empty the contents of the packet into a small cup that contains 1 or 2 tablespoons of water. Do not use other liquids or foods. Stir well and drink immediately. Refill the container with an additional small amount of water and drink the contents to ensure the whole dose is taken.
• Antacids may be used while taking Zegerid Powder.
• If you are also taking sucralfate with Zegerid Powder, it should be taken at least 30 minutes before taking Zegerid Powder. If you are also taking an imidazole antifungal (eg, ketoconazole) along with Zegerid Powder, take them at least 2 to 4 hours apart.
• Check with your doctor about taking calcium supplements or drinking milk while you are taking Zegerid Powder.
• Take Zegerid Powder regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking Zegerid Powder at the same time each day will help you to remember to take it.
• Continue to use Zegerid Powder even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
• If you miss a dose of Zegerid Powder, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Zegerid Powder.

Important safety information:

• Zegerid Powder may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Zegerid Powder. Using Zegerid Powder alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
• Limit alcoholic beverages while you are using Zegerid Powder.
• It may take several weeks for your symptoms to improve.
• Zegerid Powder contains sodium. Include Zegerid Powder when counting your daily intake of sodium.
• LAB TESTS may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Zegerid Powder is not recommended for use in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Zegerid Powder during pregnancy. Zegerid Powder is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Zegerid Powder.

Possible side effects of Zegerid Powder:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; cough; dizziness; headache.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); muscle spasms or cramps; rapid breathing; seizures.

Symptoms may include blurred vision; confusion; drowsiness; dry mouth; excessive sweating; fast heartbeat; flushing; muscle cramps; nausea; seizures; vomiting.

Store Zegerid Powder in the original packets at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Zegerid Powder out of the reach of children and away from pets.
