Virazole Solution

Generic Name: Ribavirin Inhalation Solution (rye-ba-VYE-rin)
Brand Name: Virazole

Virazole Solution should only be used in children. It is not intended for use in adults.

Virazole Solution is used for:

Treating hospitalized infants and young children with severe lower respiratory tract infections due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Virazole Solution is a broad spectrum antiviral. How Virazole Solution works is not completely understood.

Do NOT use Virazole Solution if:

you are allergic to any ingredient in Virazole Solution
you are pregnant or of childbearing age

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Virazole Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Virazole Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding
if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
if you have lung or heart problems or you are taking an immunosuppressant medicine (eg, cyclosporine)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Virazole Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) because the risk of side effects such as bleeding may be increased
Digoxin because side effects may be increased by Virazole Solution

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Virazole Solution may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Virazole Solution:

Use Virazole Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Virazole Solution is administered in the hospital with a special nebulizer attached to an oxygen tent, a face mask, or a ventilator. Ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions that you have about Virazole Solution.
If you miss a dose of Virazole Solution, contact your doctor right away.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Virazole Solution.

Important safety information:

LAB TESTS, including lung function, heart function, and blood pressure, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Virazole Solution if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. It is unknown if Virazole Solution is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Virazole Solution.

Possible side effects of Virazole Solution:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Eye redness or irritation.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; increased trouble breathing.
