Urispas


Generic Name: Flavoxate (fla-VOX-ate)
Brand Name: Urispas

Urispas is used for:

Relieving pain, frequency, and urgency of urination as well as nighttime urination associated with certain medical conditions. It may be used in combination with other medicines to treat ulcers. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Urispas is an anticholinergic. It works by decreasing muscle spasms of the bladder.

Do NOT use Urispas if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Urispas
  • you have stomach bleeding, difficulty swallowing due to esophagus problems, urinary blockage, a bowel obstruction, or rectal bleeding

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Urispas :

Some medical conditions may interact with Urispas . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have an enlarged prostate or urinary problems
  • if you have glaucoma

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Urispas . However, no specific interactions with Urispas are known at this time.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Urispas may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Urispas :

Use Urispas as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Urispas may be taken with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation.
  • If you miss a dose of Urispas , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Urispas .

Important safety information:

  • Urispas may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Urispas . Using Urispas alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medicines that cause drowsiness (eg, sedatives, tranquilizers) while taking Urispas . Urispas will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
  • Do not become overheated in hot weather or during exercise or other activities; heatstroke may occur.
  • Urispas may cause your eyes to become sensitive to sunlight. Wearing sunglasses may help.
  • Urispas is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 12 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant while taking Urispas , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Urispas during pregnancy. It is unknown if Urispas is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Urispas , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Urispas :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Blurred vision; constipation; decreased sweating; difficulty sleeping; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; headache; loss of taste; nausea; nervousness.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); diarrhea; difficulty focusing your eyes; difficulty urinating; rapid heart rate; unusual weakness; vomiting.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include blurred vision; difficulty breathing; dilated pupils; disorientation; excessive thirst; flushed, hot, dry skin; muscle weakness; nausea; restlessness; seizures; unusual dizziness or drowsiness; unusually dry mouth; vomiting.

Proper storage of Urispas :

Store Urispas at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Urispas out of the reach of children and away from pets.
