Univasc

Univasc is used for:

Treating high blood pressure. It may be used alone or with other medicines. It may also be used to treat certain conditions as determined by your doctor.

Univasc is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by decreasing certain chemicals in the body that cause blood vessels to constrict (narrow) and sodium and fluid to be stored by the kidneys.

Do NOT use Univasc if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Univasc
• you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness) to another ACE inhibitor (eg, enalapril) or similar medicine
• you are pregnant

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Univasc :

Some medical conditions may interact with Univasc . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are planning to become pregnant or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have bone marrow depression, heart problems, lupus, kidney or liver problems, low blood volume, low blood sodium levels, high blood potassium levels, or scleroderma (thickening to the skin or other tissues), or are on a sodium-restricted diet
• if you are having an allergic reaction, vomiting, or diarrhea, or are on dialysis

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Univasc . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Indomethacin, rifampin, or salicylates (eg, aspirin) because the effectiveness of Univasc may be decreased
• Clozapine, cyclosporine, indomethacin, pergolide, phenothiazines (eg, thioridazine), or thiazide-type diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide) because side effects such as kidney failure may occur
• Clozapine, cyclosporine, indomethacin, lithium, mannitol, phenothiazines (eg, thioridazine), potassium preparations (eg, potassium chloride), potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone), sulfonylureas (eg, glipizide), thiazide-type diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide), or thiopurines (eg, azathioprine) because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Univasc may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Univasc :

Use Univasc as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Take Univasc 1 hour before meals, on an empty stomach.
• Do not take Univasc within 4 hours of dextran sulfate.
• If you miss a dose of Univasc , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Univasc .

Important safety information:

• Univasc may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Do not drive or operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Univasc .
• Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Univasc .
• Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur if you stand up too fast from a lying or sitting position. Avoid sudden changes in posture.
• Do not use a salt substitute without checking with your doctor.
• Patients being treated for high blood pressure often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after beginning therapy. Continue taking your medication even though you may not feel quite "normal." Contact your doctor or pharmacist about any new symptoms.
• Black patients are at higher risk for certain side effects and may not respond as well to Univasc as patients of other races.
• LAB TESTS, including kidney function and blood pressure monitoring, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: When Univasc is used after the third month of pregnancy, it can cause injury or even death to the developing fetus. Stop taking Univasc as soon as possible if you become pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. It is unknown if Univasc is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Univasc , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Univasc :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Diarrhea; dizziness; fatigue; flu-like symptoms; lightheadedness when sitting or standing; persistent, dry cough.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; difficulty swallowing; fainting; unusual stomach pain; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include dizziness; low body temperature; weakness.

Store Univasc at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Univasc out of the reach of children and away from pets.
