Why is Tobrex prescribed?

Tobrex is an antibiotic applied to the eye to treat bacterial infections.

In order to clear up your infection completely, keep using Tobrex for the full time of treatment, even if your symptoms have disappeared.

How should you use Tobrex?

To apply Tobrex eye drops:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Gently pull your lower eyelid down to form a pocket between your eye and eyelid.
  3. Brace the bottle on the bridge of your nose or your forehead.
  4. Do not let the applicator tip touch your eye or any other surface.
  5. Tilt your head back and squeeze the medication into the eye.
  6. Close your eyes gently.
  7. Keep your eyes closed for 1 to 2 minutes.
  8. Do not rinse the dropper.
  9. If you are using another eye drop wait 5 to 10 minutes before applying it.

To apply the ointment form of Tobrex:

  1. Tilt your head back.
  2. Place a finger on your cheek just under your eye and gently pull down until a "V" pocket is formed between your eyeball and your lower lid.
  3. Place about half an inch of Tobrex in the "V" pocket. Do not let the tip of the tube touch the eye.
  4. Look downward before closing your eye.

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule.

Store Tobrex at room temperature, away from heat, or in the refrigerator. Do not allow to freeze.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue to take Tobrex.

  • More common side effects may include:
    Abnormal redness of eye tissue, allergic reactions, lid itching, lid swelling

Why should Tobrex not be prescribed?

If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Tobrex or any of its ingredients, you should not use Tobrex. Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions you have experienced.

Special warnings about Tobrex

If you experience an allergic reaction to Tobrex, discontinue use and inform your doctor.

Continued or prolonged use of Tobrex may result in a growth of bacteria that do not respond to Tobrex and can cause a secondary infection.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Tobrex

If you are taking any other prescription antibiotics for your eyes, check with your doctor before using Tobrex. Using Tobrex with certain other antibiotics in your system may cause an overdose.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

The effects of Tobrex during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Tobrex may appear in breast milk. Your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment with Tobrex is finished.

Recommended dosage

ADULTS

Solution

If the infection is mild to moderate, place 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours. In severe infections, place 2 drops into the eye(s) every hour until there is improvement. Then you will be instructed to use less medication before you stop using it altogether.

Ointment

If the infection is mild to moderate, apply a half-inch ribbon into the affected eye(s) 2 or 3 times per day. In severe infections, apply a half-inch ribbon into the affected eye(s) every 3 or 4 hours until there is improvement. Then use less medication before stopping altogether.

CHILDREN

Your doctor will tailor a dose for the child.

Overdosage

Any medication used in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical assistance immediately.

  • Symptoms of Tobrex overdose may be similar to side effects. They include:
    Corneal redness and inflammation, excessive eye tearing, lid itching and swelling
