Tetracycline Suspension

Generic Name: Tetracycline Oral Suspension (tet-ra-SYE-kleen)
Brand Name: Sumycin

Tetracycline Suspension is used for:

Treating infections caused by certain bacteria. It is also used to treat certain types of acne and used along with other medicines to treat amoeba infections. It may also be used to treat certain conditions as determined by your doctor.

Tetracycline Suspension is a tetracycline antibiotic. Tetracyclines slow the growth of sensitive bacteria by interfering with the production of proteins needed by the bacteria to grow. Slowing the bacteria"s growth allows the body"s defense mechanisms (eg, white blood cells) to destroy them.

Do NOT use Tetracycline Suspension if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Tetracycline Suspension
  • you have a sulfite allergy
  • you are taking acitretin, isotretinoin, or a penicillin

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Tetracycline Suspension:

Some medical conditions may interact with Tetracycline Suspension. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines or other substances
  • if you have diarrhea, a stomach or bowel infection, kidney problems, or asthma

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Tetracycline Suspension. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Acitretin or isotretinoin because side effects such as increased pressure in the fluid surrounding the brain may occur
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), digoxin, methotrexate, or methoxyflurane because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
  • Atovaquone, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), or penicillins because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Tetracycline Suspension may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Tetracycline Suspension:

Use Tetracycline Suspension as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Tetracycline Suspension on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
  • Shake well before using. Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure this dose. Take Tetracycline Suspension with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL). Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking Tetracycline Suspension.
  • Take Tetracycline Suspension 2 to 3 hours before or after taking any products containing magnesium, aluminum, bismuth, calcium, iron, or zinc; or urinary alkalinizers (eg, daily antacids). Some examples include quinapril, didanosine, vitamins/minerals, and antacids. Dairy products (eg, milk, yogurt), calcium-enriched orange juice, and sucralfate also are included. These products bind with Tetracycline Suspension, preventing its full absorption.
  • Tetracycline Suspension works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
  • To clear up your infection completely, continue using Tetracycline Suspension for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days.
  • If you miss a dose of Tetracycline Suspension, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Tetracycline Suspension.

Important safety information:

  • Tetracycline Suspension may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Tetracycline Suspension. Using Tetracycline Suspension alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Some of these products contain sulfites, which can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals (eg, asthma patients). If you have previously had allergic reactions to sulfites, contact your pharmacist to determine if the product you are taking contains sulfites.
  • Tetracycline Suspension is effective only against bacteria. It is not effective for treating viral infections (eg, the common cold).
  • Long-term or repeated use of Tetracycline Suspension may cause a second infection. Your doctor may want to change your medicine to treat the second infection. Contact your doctor if signs of a second infection occur.
  • Do not use after expiration date. Outdated medicine is highly toxic to the kidneys.
  • Tetracycline Suspension may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Tetracycline Suspension. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period.
  • If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools occur, contact your doctor at once. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor.
  • It is important to use Tetracycline Suspension for the full course of treatment. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of Tetracycline Suspension and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Tetracycline Suspension and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
  • If you are using Tetracycline Suspension for a prolonged period of time, LAB TESTS, including kidney and liver tests and complete blood cell counts, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use of Tetracycline Suspension is not recommended in CHILDREN younger than 9 years of age. Permanent yellow-gray-brown discoloration of the teeth may occur.
  • Taking Tetracycline Suspension while you are using birth control pills may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Use an additional form of birth control while you are taking Tetracycline Suspension.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: This medicine has been shown to cause harm to the human fetus. If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Tetracycline Suspension during pregnancy. Tetracycline Suspension is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Tetracycline Suspension.
