Generic Name: Tenofovir (te-NOE-fo-veer)
Brand Name: Viread

Lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood) has been reported with this type of medicine. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience extreme weakness or tiredness; unusual muscle pain; difficulty breathing; stomach pain with nausea and vomiting; feeling cold, especially in the arms and legs; dizziness or lightheadedness; or fast or irregular heartbeat. Tenofovir is not for the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection. Severe worsening of hepatitis infection ("flare-ups") has been reported with the use of similar medicines. Patients with both HIV and hepatitis B virus need close medical follow-up for several months after stopping use of Tenofovir . Do not stop taking Tenofovir without your doctor"s approval.

Tenofovir is used for:

Treating HIV infection in combination with other medicines. Tenofovir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

Tenofovir is an antiviral reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It works by stopping the HIV virus from duplicating.

Do NOT use Tenofovir if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Tenofovir
  • you have a history of abnormal liver function tests, severe liver problems (eg, an enlarged liver), or lactic acidosis

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Tenofovir :

Some medical conditions may interact with Tenofovir . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a history of bone problems or kidney problems, including dialysis treatment, or you are overweight
  • if you have liver problems, including hepatitis B virus infection

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Tenofovir . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Medicines that may harm the kidney (eg, aminoglycoside antibiotics [eg, gentamicin], amphotericin B, cyclosporine, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs] [eg, ibuprofen], tacrolimus, vancomycin) or certain antiviral medicines (eg, acyclovir, cidofovir, ganciclovir) because the risk of side effects of Tenofovir may be increased. Ask your doctor if you are unsure if any of your medicines might harm your kidneys or liver.
  • Didanosine or HIV protease inhibitors (eg, atazanavir) because the side effects of these medicines may be increased
  • HIV protease inhibitors (eg, atazanavir) because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Tenofovir may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Tenofovir :

Use Tenofovir as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Tenofovir may be taken with or without food.
  • Tenofovir comes with an additional patient leaflet. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Tenofovir refilled.
  • It is important to not miss any doses of Tenofovir . Taking Tenofovir at the same time each day will help you to remember to take it.
  • Continue to take Tenofovir even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of Tenofovir and increase the risk that your HIV will no longer be sensitive to Tenofovir or to other similar medicines.
  • Do not miss any doses. If you miss a dose of Tenofovir and you are taking one dose daily, take the missed dose if you remember the same day. Skip the missed dose if you do not remember until the next day. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Tenofovir .

Important safety information:

  • Tenofovir may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Tenofovir . Using Tenofovir alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Certain medicines should not be used with Tenofovir . Keep a list of all the medicine that you take. Make a new list when medicines are added or stopped. Give copies of this list to all of your health care providers and pharmacist every time you visit your health care provider or fill a prescription.
  • When your medicine supply begins to run low, get more from your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. This virus may develop resistance to Tenofovir if you stop, even for a short period of time or may make the virus harder to treat.
  • Tenofovir is not a cure for HIV infection and patients may continue to acquire illnesses/infections associated with HIV infection. Remain under the care of your health care provider.
  • Tenofovir offers no protection from the transmission of HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Use barrier forms of contraception (eg, condoms) if you are infected with HIV.
  • Tenofovir is not for the treatment of hepatitis B virus. If you have hepatitis B virus and HIV, you will need close medical follow-up for several months after stopping treatment with Tenofovir . Follow-up includes medical exams and blood tests to check for hepatitis B virus infection that could be getting worse.

The cause and long-term effects of these changes are unknown. Discuss the risks and benefits of therapy with your doctor, as well as the possible role of exercise to reduce this side effect.
  • LAB TESTS, including liver and kidney function tests and bone mineral density tests, may be performed to monitor your progress and check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Tenofovir with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 18 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
