Stadol Solution


Generic Name: Butorphanol Injection Solution (byoo-TOR-fan-ahl)
Brand Name: Stadol

Stadol Solution is used for:

Treating or preventing moderate to severe pain due to surgery, labor, or other causes. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Stadol Solution is a narcotic analgesic. It works by blocking certain nerve stimulation that causes pain.

Do NOT use Stadol Solution if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Stadol Solution
  • you have had a severe allergic reaction (severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness) to morphine or hydromorphone
  • you are taking sodium oxybate (gamma hydroxybutyrate; GHB) or you drink alcohol
  • you have diarrhea due to poisoning, difficulty breathing, or pseudomembranous colitis
  • you are dependent on narcotic pain relievers

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Stadol Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Stadol Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines or other substances
  • if you have stomach problems; prostate problems; asthma or other breathing problems; heart problems; recent heart attack, surgery, or trauma; liver disease; high blood pressure; underactive thyroid; increased pressure on the brain or a brain lesion; thoughts of suicide; seizures; bowel problems; or urinary problems
  • if you have a history of substance abuse or dependence

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Stadol Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Naltrexone or rifampin because the effectiveness of Stadol Solution may be decreased
  • Barbiturate anesthetics (eg, thiopental), cimetidine, ethanol, ketorolac, or sodium oxybate (GHB) because side effects, such as difficulty breathing or seizures, may occur
  • Barbiturate anesthetics (eg, thiopental) or sodium oxybate (GHB) because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
  • Methadone or mexiletine because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Stadol Solution may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Stadol Solution:

Use Stadol Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • If you are using Stadol Solution at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider. If the medicine contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • If you miss a dose of Stadol Solution and are using it regularly, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Stadol Solution.

Important safety information:

  • Stadol Solution may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Stadol Solution. Using Stadol Solution alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medicines that cause drowsiness (eg, sedatives, tranquilizers) while taking Stadol Solution. Stadol Solution will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have any questions about which medicines are depressants.
  • Before you have any medical or dental surgery or emergency treatment, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Stadol Solution.
  • Do not reuse needles or syringes. Dispose of them properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full.
  • Caution should be used in the ELDERLY since they may be more sensitive to the effects of Stadol Solution.
  • Stadol Solution is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been established.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Stadol Solution during pregnancy. Stadol Solution is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Stadol Solution, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Stadol Solution may be habit-forming and lead to DEPENDENCE if used in high doses or for a long period of time. If you are on long-term or high dosage therapy, you may have WITHDRAWAL symptoms (eg, convulsions, tremor, stomach and muscle cramps, vomiting, sweating) if you suddenly stop taking Stadol Solution. Do not stop therapy abruptly or change dosage without asking your doctor or pharmacist. Discuss overuse with your doctor or pharmacist.

Possible side effects of Stadol Solution:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Confusion; constipation; dizziness; dry mouth; excessive drowsiness; headache; itching; nausea; rash; seizures; sleepiness; sleeplessness; stuffy nose; sweating.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; excessive confusion; excessive drowsiness; fainting; ringing in the ears; seizures; slow or difficult breathing; slow or irregular heartbeat; vomiting.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include cold and clammy skin; deep sleep; dizziness; drowsiness; lightheadedness; loss of consciousness; slowed breathing; slowed heartbeat.

Proper storage of Stadol Solution:

Store Stadol Solution at room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 degrees C) away from heat and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Stadol Solution out of the reach of children and away from pets.
