Somavert


Generic Name: Pegvisomant (peg-VIE-soo-mant)
Brand Name: Somavert

Somavert is used for:

Treating acromegaly in patients who have not responded to surgery, radiation therapy, or other medical procedures or are not candidates for those treatments.

Somavert is a growth hormone receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the site of action for growth hormone, which helps to inhibit the effects of growth hormone.

Do NOT use Somavert if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Somavert
  • you are allergic to latex

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Somavert :

Some medical conditions may interact with Somavert . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have diabetes, tumors, growths, liver problems, or alcohol abuse problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Somavert . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Narcotic pain medicine (eg, codeine) because the effectiveness of Somavert may be decreased
  • Insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents because side effects may be increased by Somavert

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Somavert may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Somavert :

Use Somavert as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Somavert comes with an additional patient leaflet. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Somavert refilled.
  • Somavert is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Somavert at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • Somavert must be mixed before using. Follow the directions included in the package for mixing Somavert .
  • Do not shake Somavert after mixing it. Hold the vial between the palms of both hands and gently roll it to dissolve the powder.
  • Use Somavert within 6 hours after mixing it. Throw away any unused medicine.
  • If Somavert contains particles or is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • If you miss a dose of Somavert , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Somavert .

Important safety information:

  • Somavert may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Somavert . Using Somavert alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Somavert may interfere with certain lab tests, including some growth hormone level tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Somavert .
  • LAB TESTS, including growth hormone blood levels, insulin-like growth factor blood levels, and liver function tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Somavert with extreme caution in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant while taking Somavert , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Somavert during pregnancy. It is unknown if Somavert is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Somavert , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Somavert :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Diarrhea; dizziness; nausea; pain; pain, redness, or itching at the injection site.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; flu-like symptoms (eg, chills, fever, muscle aches, weakness); severe stomach pain; swelling of the legs and feet; unusual weight gain; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include increased fatigue.

Proper storage of Somavert :

Before mixing, store Somavert in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Do not freeze. Use Somavert within 6 hours after mixing and throw away any unused medicine. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Somavert out of the reach of children and away from pets.
