Simvastatin

Generic Name: Simvastatin (SIM-va-stat-in)
Brand Name: Zocor

Simvastatin is used for:

Lowering blood cholesterol levels and thereby reducing the risk of stroke, heart attack, and heart disease. Simvastatin may also be used to lower triglycerides.

Simvastatin is a "statin." It works by blocking a certain chemical that is necessary for your body to manufacture cholesterol.

Do NOT use Simvastatin if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Simvastatin
  • you are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • you have active liver disease or repeated blood tests indicating possible liver problems of unknown cause
  • you are taking a fibrate (eg, clofibrate, gemfibrozil), an HIV protease inhibitor (eg, ritonavir), an azole antifungal (eg, itraconazole), a macrolide (eg, erythromycin), a ketolide (eg, telithromycin), or nefazodone

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Simvastatin :

Some medical conditions may interact with Simvastatin . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you plan to become pregnant
  • if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have endocrine, electrolyte, or metabolic disease, or low blood pressure
  • if you consume more than 3 alcoholic beverages per day
  • if you have severe kidney problems, a history of liver disease, uncontrolled seizures, trauma, major surgery, infection, or have had an organ transplant

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Simvastatin . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Bosentan, rifampin, or St. John"s wort because the effectiveness of Simvastatin may be decreased.
  • Amiodarone, azole antifungals (eg, itraconazole), clofibrate, cyclosporine, danazol, delavirdine, diltiazem, fluconazole, gemfibrozil, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), imatinib, ketolides (eg, telithromycin), macrolides (eg, erythromycin), nefazodone, niacin, streptogramins (eg, quinupristin/dalfopristin), verapamil, and voriconazole because side effects, such as muscle weakness and aching, may occur.
  • Warfarin because side effects, including increased risk of bleeding, may be increased by Simvastatin

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Simvastatin may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Simvastatin :

Use Simvastatin as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Simvastatin may be taken with or without food.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice at the same time you take Simvastatin . This may increase the amount of Simvastatin in your blood, which may increase your risks for serious side effects. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before including grapefruit or grapefruit juice in your diet while you are taking this medicine.
  • If you are also taking cholestyramine, you should take the cholestyramine in the morning and Simvastatin in the evening to minimize any drug interactions. Cholestyramine can reduce the amount of Simvastatin in your blood, which will decrease its effectiveness.
  • Simvastatin comes with an additional patient leaflet. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Simvastatin refilled.
  • In general, take Simvastatin in the evening.
  • Simvastatin is most effective when used with exercise and a diet that reduces the intake of cholesterol (fat) and saturated fats.
  • Continue taking Simvastatin even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. Most people with high cholesterol do not feel sick.
  • If you miss a dose of Simvastatin , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Simvastatin .

Important safety information:

  • Simvastatin may cause liver damage. If you consume 3 or more alcohol-containing drinks every day, ask your doctor if you should take Simvastatin or other pain relievers/fever reducers. Alcohol use combined with Simvastatin may increase your risk for liver damage.
  • Simvastatin may cause injury to your muscles, especially when taken in higher doses or when taken with certain other medicines. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience muscle pain or weakness, especially with a fever.
  • LAB TESTS, including lipid profile and liver functions, may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Simvastatin is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Simvastatin if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. Do not breast-feed while taking Simvastatin .
