Rosuvastatin

Generic Name: Rosuvastatin (roe-SOO-va-sta-tin)
Brand Name: Crestor

Rosuvastatin is used for:

Lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increasing "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein [HDL]) levels in patients who have also adopted lifestyle changes (eg, diet and exercise).

Rosuvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin). It works in conjunction with diet and exercise by reducing the production of triglycerides in the liver.

Do NOT use Rosuvastatin if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Rosuvastatin
  • you have liver problems or unexplained abnormal liver function test results
  • you are pregnant or breast-feeding

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Rosuvastatin :

Some medical conditions may interact with Rosuvastatin . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are planning to become pregnant
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have alcoholism or have a history of alcohol abuse
  • if you have a history of muscle problems or weakness, heart problems, kidney problems, an underactive thyroid, low blood pressure, dehydration, a severe infection, an infection of the blood, seizures, liver problems, or diabetes; metabolism, endocrine, or electrolyte problems; high levels of the enzyme creatine phosphokinase; or a family history of muscle problems
  • if you have had recent trauma or surgery (including organ transplant)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Rosuvastatin . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Cyclosporine, fibrates (eg, clofibrate), gemfibrozil, or niacin because they may increase the risk of Rosuvastatin "s side effects
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), cimetidine, ketoconazole, macrolide immunosuppressants (eg, tacrolimus), or spironolactone because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Rosuvastatin

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Rosuvastatin may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Rosuvastatin :

Use Rosuvastatin as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Rosuvastatin should be taken regularly to get the most benefit from it. Taking Rosuvastatin at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
  • If you miss a dose of Rosuvastatin , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Rosuvastatin .
