Robinul

Robinul is used for:

Reducing secretions in the mouth, throat, airway, and stomach before surgery. It is used to block certain reflexes before and during surgery and to protect against certain side effects of some medicines used during surgery. It is used to treat stomach ulcers in combination with other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Robinul is an anticholinergic. It blocks the activity of a certain chemical (acetylcholine) in the body, which decreases secretions and decreases side effects caused by medicines that may increase the action of acetylcholine in the body.

Do NOT use Robinul if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Robinul
• if you have heart problems caused by bleeding
• you are being treated for an ulcer and you also have glaucoma, trouble urinating (eg, bladder neck obstruction), certain stomach or bowel problems (eg, stomach or bowel blockage, bowel muscle problems, severe ulcerative colitis, toxic megacolon), certain esophagus problems (eg, achalasia, reflux), or myasthenia gravis

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Robinul :

Some medical conditions may interact with Robinul . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you are or may be allergic to latex
• if you have nerve problems (eg, autonomic neuropathy), Down syndrome, prostate problems, liver problems, kidney problems, increased pressure in the eyes, or a family history of glaucoma
• if you have heart problems (eg, coronary heart disease, heart failure), a fast or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, or an overactive thyroid
• if you have stomach or bowel problems (eg, ulcerative colitis), diarrhea, hiatal hernia caused by reflux disease, or an ileostomy or colostomy
• if the patient is a child with spastic paralysis or brain damage

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Robinul . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Anticholinergics (eg, benztropine), phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), potassium chloride, or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline) because side effects may be increased by Robinul

How to use Robinul :

Use Robinul as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Robinul is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Robinul at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
• If Robinul contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
• Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
• If you miss a dose of Robinul , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Robinul .

Important safety information:

• Robinul may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Robinul . Using Robinul alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
• Robinul will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
• Drinking fluids, maintaining good oral hygiene, and sucking on hard sugarless candy can help relieve dry mouth.
• Do not become overheated in hot weather or during exercise or other activities because heatstroke may occur.
• Use Robinul with extreme caution if you have a fever because heatstroke caused by decreased sweating may occur.
• Robinul may cause your eyes to be sensitive to light. Wearing sunglasses may help.
• Use Robinul with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects.
• Robinul contains benzyl alcohol, a preservative. Do not use Robinul in NEWBORNS or INFANTS younger than 1 month of age because serious and sometimes fatal nervous system problems and other side effects may occur.
• Use Robinul with extreme caution in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Robinul during pregnancy. It is unknown if Robinul is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Robinul , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Robinul :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Bloated feeling; blurred vision; constipation; decreased milk production; decreased sweating; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; dry skin; enlarged pupils; headache; loss of taste; nausea; nervousness; pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site; sleeplessness; weakness.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; confusion; diarrhea; difficulty focusing the eyes; difficulty urinating; excessive excitement; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; impotence (erectile dysfunction); pounding in the chest; seizures; shortness of breath; unusual weakness; vomiting.

Symptoms may include blurred vision; convulsions; difficulty breathing; disorientation; dry mouth; enlarged pupils; excessive thirst; flushed, hot, dry skin; muscle weakness; nausea; restlessness; seizures; unusual dizziness or drowsiness; vomiting.

Robinul is usually handled and stored by a health care provider. If you are using Robinul at home, store Robinul as directed by your pharmacist or health care provider. Keep Robinul out of the reach of children and away from pets.
