Provocholine Solution

Generic Name: Methacholine Inhalation Solution (meth-ah-KOH-leen)
Brand Name: Provocholine

Provocholine Solution is only used during lung function tests to determine if a patient has asthma. It is not used to treat asthma. Provocholine Solution may cause severe breathing problems in some patients. It should only be used in a setting where emergency medicines and equipment are available to treat severe breathing problems if they occur. Provocholine Solution should not be given to anyone who has apparent symptoms of asthma, wheezing, or very low lung function tests.

Provocholine Solution is used for:

Determining if you have asthma.

Provocholine Solution is a cholinergic bronchoconstrictor agent. It works by stimulating certain nerve fibers in the lung, which causes muscle spasms of the airways.

Do NOT use Provocholine Solution if:

you are allergic to any ingredient in Provocholine Solution or to similar medicines
you are taking a beta-blocker (eg, propranolol)
you have symptoms of asthma (eg, wheezing) or very low lung function test results

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Provocholine Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Provocholine Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
if you have seizures, heart disease, thyroid disease, blockage of the bladder or trouble urinating, eye problems, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), high or low blood pressure, nerve problems (eg, vagotonia), Parkinson disease, glaucoma, intestinal or abdominal problems, or stomach ulcers

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Provocholine Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol) because the side effects of Provocholine Solution, such as difficulty breathing, may be increased

How to use Provocholine Solution:

Use Provocholine Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Provocholine Solution is usually administered at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic.
Provocholine Solution is for inhalation only. It should not be injected or taken by mouth. Ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions you may have about Provocholine Solution.
If you miss a dose of Provocholine Solution, contact your doctor immediately.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Provocholine Solution.

Important safety information:

Women of childbearing age should receive Provocholine Solution either within 10 days after the onset of menstruation or within 2 weeks of a negative pregnancy test.
LAB TESTS, including lung function tests, may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
Use Provocholine Solution with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 5 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: It is unknown if Provocholine Solution can cause harm to the fetus. If you become pregnant while taking Provocholine Solution, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Provocholine Solution during pregnancy. It is unknown if Provocholine Solution is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while using Provocholine Solution.

Possible side effects of Provocholine Solution:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Headache; itching; lightheadedness; throat irritation.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; cough; fainting; severe dizziness; wheezing.
