Proscar

Generic Name: Finasteride 5 mg Tablets (fi-NAS-teer-ide)
Brand Name: Proscar

Proscar is used for:

Treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is enlargement of the prostate gland and reducing symptoms, including a weak or interrupted urinary stream, feeling that you cannot empty your bladder completely, delay or hesitation when you start to urinate, frequent urination especially at night, feeling that you must urinate right away; reducing the risk of developing a sudden inability to pass urine; and reducing the need for surgery. It may also be used with another medicine to reduce the progression of BPH or to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Proscar is an enzyme inhibitor. It works by lowering levels of a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is a major cause of prostate growth; lowering DHT leads to shrinkage of the enlarged prostate gland.
