Propylthiouracil


Generic Name: Propylthiouracil (pro-pill-thye-oh-YOOR-ah-sill)
Brand Name: Generic only. No brands available.

Propylthiouracil is used for:

Treating an overactive thyroid gland. It may be used to prepare the thyroid gland for surgery or treatment with radioactive iodine as well as when surgery to remove the thyroid gland is not an option. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Propylthiouracil is an antithyroid agent. It works by reducing the formation of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland.

Do NOT use Propylthiouracil if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Propylthiouracil
  • you are breast-feeding

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Propylthiouracil :

Some medical conditions may interact with Propylthiouracil . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have bone marrow depression, peeling of the skin, or liver disease

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Propylthiouracil . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol) or theophylline because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Propylthiouracil
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), corticosteroids (eg, hydrocortisone), or digitalis glycosides (eg, digoxin) because their effectiveness may be altered by Propylthiouracil and dosage adjustments may be required

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Propylthiouracil may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Propylthiouracil :

Use Propylthiouracil as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Propylthiouracil by mouth with or without food.
  • Unless directed otherwise by your doctor, space your doses evenly throughout the day.
  • If you miss a dose of Propylthiouracil , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, take the 2 doses together, then go back to your regular dosing schedule.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Propylthiouracil .

Important safety information:

  • Propylthiouracil may cause drowsiness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Propylthiouracil with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Lab tests, including thyroid function tests and complete blood cell counts, may be performed while you use Propylthiouracil . These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Propylthiouracil should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 6 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Propylthiouracil has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Propylthiouracil while you are pregnant. Propylthiouracil is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Propylthiouracil .

Possible side effects of Propylthiouracil :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Abnormal skin sensations; change in taste; drowsiness; enlarged salivary glands; feeling of whirling motion; hair loss; headache; itching; muscle pain; nausea; skin color changes; stomach upset; swelling; swollen or painful lymph nodes.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blood cell changes; fever; sore throat; unusual bleeding or bruising; vomiting; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include fever; headache; joint pain; nausea; stomach upset; vomiting.

Proper storage of Propylthiouracil :

Store Propylthiouracil at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Propylthiouracil out of the reach of children and away from pets.
