Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets

Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets is used for:

Treating and preventing ulcers of the stomach and upper small intestine including ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS, eg, ibuprofen); conditions that cause increased acid secretion (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome); gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, or the bubbling of stomach contents into the food pipe, which causes heartburn); and esophagitis or inflammation of the food pipe due to acid reflux. It may also be used with other medications (antibiotics) to treat ulcers of the small intestines.

Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets is an acid pump inhibitor (or proton pump inhibitor). It works by turning off some of the acid pumps in the stomach lining and reduces the amount of acid in the stomach and backing up into the esophagus (food pipe).

Do NOT use Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets

Before using Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets:

Some medical conditions may interact with Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• you have phenylketonuria (inability to eliminate phenylalanine)
• if you have liver disease

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole) or protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets
• Warfarin because side effects such as bleeding be increased by Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets

How to use Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets:

Use Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Take Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets before eating.
• Do not crush or chew tablets.
• Do not remove the blister from the outer pouch until you are ready to take Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets.
• Make sure that your hands are dry when you open Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets. Do not push the tablet through the foil.
• Peel back the foil on the blister pack and place the tablet on the tongue. The tablet dissolves quickly (and it can be swallowed with saliva). Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets may be taken with or without water. Take the tablet immediately after opening the blister pack. Do not store the removed tablet for future use.
• Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets may also be given by oral syringe or through a nasogastric (NG) tube. To give the medicine by oral syringe, place the tablet in the syringe. The amount of water that is drawn into the syringe depends on the strength of the tablet. (For a 15 mg tablet, approximately 4 mL of water should be drawn into the syringe. For a 30 mg tablet, approximately 10 mL of water should be drawn into the syringe.) Shake the mixture in the syringe gently. After the tablet disperses, it should be used immediately. Medicine prepared in an oral syringe must be used within 15 minutes. Refill the syringe with 2 to 5 mL water to rinse the syringe. Shake gently and administer the rinse to make sure the entire dose is removed from the syringe. To give Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets through an NG tube, prepare the medicine as described for use in an oral syringe. After the tablet disperses, inject the mixture into the NG tube within 15 minutes of mixing. Refill the syringe with approximately 5 mL of water, shake gently, and inject into the NG tube to flush any remaining medicine completely down the tube.
• Take Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets at least 30 minutes before taking sucralfate and at least 2 hours before taking an azole antifungal (eg, ketoconazole) to minimize the risks of drug interactions.
• Continue taking Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets even if you feel better. Using Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets at the same time each day will help you get the most benefit from it.
• If you miss a dose of Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

• Phenylketonurics: Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets contains phenylalanine.
• Use Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets with extreme caution in CHILDREN under the age of 1 year. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets during pregnancy. It is unknown if Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; diarrhea; headache; stomach pain.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); severe stomach pain.

Store Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C); excursions permitted to 59 to 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C). S tore in the original packaging until just before use. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Prevacid Delayed -Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets out of the reach of children and away from pets.
