Oxiconazole Cream


Generic Name: Oxiconazole Cream (ox-ee-KON-uh-zole)
Brand Name: Oxistat

Oxiconazole Cream is used for:

Treating fungal infections, such as athlete"s foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Oxiconazole Cream is an antifungal. It works by killing or preventing the growth of the fungus.

Do NOT use Oxiconazole Cream if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Oxiconazole Cream
  • you are taking astemizole or terfenadine

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Oxiconazole Cream:

Some medical conditions may interact with Oxiconazole Cream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Oxiconazole Cream. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), H1 antagonists (eg, astemizole, terfenadine), or sulfonylureas (eg, glyburide) because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Oxiconazole Cream may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Oxiconazole Cream:

Use Oxiconazole Cream as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Clean the affected area with soap and water and dry thoroughly.
  • Apply enough medicine to cover the affected area. Rub in gently.
  • Do not cover area with bandages or other occlusive dressings unless directed otherwise by your doctor.
  • Wash your hands immediately after using Oxiconazole Cream, unless your hands are a part of the treated area.
  • To clear up your infection completely, continue using Oxiconazole Cream for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days.
  • If you miss a dose of Oxiconazole Cream, use it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed, or it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Oxiconazole Cream.

Important safety information:

  • Oxiconazole Cream is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, genital area, and other mucous membranes.
  • Use Oxiconazole Cream for the full treatment time recommended by your health care provider even though symptoms may have improved. Talk with your health care provider if there is no improvement after 2 to 4 weeks, or sooner if the condition worsens.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Oxiconazole Cream during pregnancy. Oxiconazole Cream is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Oxiconazole Cream.

Possible side effects of Oxiconazole Cream:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Mild stinging.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); nodules; reddening, blistering, peeling, itching, or burning of skin; scaling; skin cracking; swelling of the hair follicles.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Oxiconazole Cream may be harmful if swallowed.

Proper storage of Oxiconazole Cream:

Store Oxiconazole Cream between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep Oxiconazole Cream out of the reach of children and away from pets.
