Orphenadrine


Generic Name: Orphenadrine Injection (ore-FEN-uh-dreen)
Brand Name: Norflex

Orphenadrine is used for:

Treating short-term painful musculoskeletal conditions. This medication should be used with rest, physical therapy, and other measures. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Orphenadrine is a skeletal muscle relaxant. It works by helping to relax your muscles and decrease pain.

Do NOT use Orphenadrine if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Orphenadrine
  • you have glaucoma, stomach or intestinal blockage, stomach ulcers, a blockage of your bladder, certain problems with your esophagus (eg, decreased esophageal motility or severe irritation caused by reflux), enlargement of the prostate, ulcerative colitis, or myasthenia gravis

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Orphenadrine :

Some medical conditions may interact with Orphenadrine . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances (eg, sulfites)
  • if you have kidney disease, bladder problems, liver disease, or the blood disease porphyria
  • if you have a history of heart problems or fast or irregular heartbeat

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Orphenadrine . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Digoxin or propoxyphene because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
  • Phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine) because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Orphenadrine may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Orphenadrine :

Use Orphenadrine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Orphenadrine is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Orphenadrine at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • If Orphenadrine contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Orphenadrine , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Orphenadrine .

Important safety information:

  • Orphenadrine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Orphenadrine . Using Orphenadrine alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • If dizziness occurs, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness.
  • Some of these products contain sulfites, which can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals (eg, asthma patients). If you have previously had allergic reactions to sulfites, contact your pharmacist to determine if the product you are taking contains sulfites.
  • LAB TESTS, including blood counts, kidney function, and liver function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Orphenadrine with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects.
  • Orphenadrine is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant while taking Orphenadrine , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Orphenadrine during pregnancy. It is unknown if Orphenadrine is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Orphenadrine , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Orphenadrine :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Agitation; blurred vision; constipation; dizziness or lightheadedness; drowsiness; dry mouth; headache; large pupils; nausea; stomach irritation or upset; vomiting; weakness.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chills, fever, or sore throat; confusion; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; pain, swelling, or redness the injection site; tremor; trouble urinating or inability to urinate.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include fainting; irregular heart rate; loss of consciousness; and seizures.

Proper storage of Orphenadrine :

Store Orphenadrine at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Orphenadrine out of the reach of children and away from pets.
