Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules

Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules is used for:

Treating ulcers, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules may be used with antibiotics to treat and eliminate certain types of ulcers. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It reduces stomach acid secretion by blocking the final step of acid production by the stomach lining.

Do NOT use Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules
• you are using an HIV protease inhibitor (eg, indinavir)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules:

Some medical conditions may interact with Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines or other substances
• if you have liver or other stomach problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Imidazoles (eg, ketoconazole) or voriconazole because they may increase the risk of Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules"s side effects
• Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), benzodiazepines (eg, diazepam), carbamazepine, cilostazol, clarithromycin, clozapine, cyclosporine, digoxin, disulfiram, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), or methotrexate because the side effects or toxic effects of these medicines may be increased and dosage adjustments may be necessary
• Cyclosporine, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir), imidazoles (eg, ketoconazole), or vitamin B₁₂ because their effectiveness may be decreased by Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules

How to use Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules:

Use Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Take Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules before eating.
• Swallow Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing.
• If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, you may open it and sprinkle on applesauce. Add 1 tablespoon of applesauce to an empty bowl, open the capsule, and carefully empty all of the pellets on to the applesauce. Mix the pellets with the applesauce and swallow the mixture immediately with a glass of cool water to make sure you have completely swallowed all of the pellets. The applesauce should not be hot and should be soft enough to be swallowed without chewing. Do not crush or chew the pellets. Do not store the pellet/applesauce mixture for future use.
• Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules may be taken with antacids if your doctor has instructed you to take antacids.
• If you miss a dose of Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

• Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules. Using Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
• Potent acid-reducing medicines such as omeprazole can decrease the effectiveness of sucralfate, as well as other drugs, such as the antifungals ketoconazole and itraconazole. If instructed to take any of these medicines while taking omeprazole, consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the proper timing of each dose.
• Do not drink alcohol while you are using Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules.
• Additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are also taking ampicillin, iron, or moclobemide.
• Lab tests, including liver function and complete blood count, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Use Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 2 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules during pregnancy. It is unknown if Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules.

Possible side effects of Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; cough; diarrhea; dizziness; gas; headache; nausea; stomach pain; vomiting.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).

Symptoms may include blurred vision; confusion; drowsiness; dry mouth; excessive sweating; fast heartbeat; flushing; headache; nausea.

Store Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), in a tight container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules out of the reach of children and away from pets.
