Generic Name: Esomeprazole Injection (e-so-MEP-ra-zole)
Brand Name: Nexium I.V.

Nexium I.V. is used for:

Treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients with a history of irritation and swelling of the esophagus (food pipe) when medicine cannot be taken by mouth. Nexium I.V. may also be used for certain conditions as determined by your doctor.

Nexium I.V. is a proton pump inhibitor. It works by blocking some of the acid pumps in the stomach lining and reducing the amount of acid backing up into the esophagus.

Do NOT use Nexium I.V. if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Nexium I.V. or to benzimidazoles (eg, omeprazole)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Nexium I.V. :

Some medical conditions may interact with Nexium I.V. . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have liver problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Nexium I.V. . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Voriconazole because side effects of Nexium I.V. may be increased
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), cilostazol, or digoxin because side effects may be increased by Nexium I.V.
  • HIV protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir), imidazoles (eg, ketoconazole), or iron because their effectiveness may be decreased by this medicine

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Nexium I.V. may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Nexium I.V. :

Use Nexium I.V. as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Nexium I.V. is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Nexium I.V. at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • If Nexium I.V. contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Nexium I.V. , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

  • Nexium I.V. may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Nexium I.V. . Using Nexium I.V. alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Notify your doctor if you have any symptoms of a bleeding ulcer, such as black, tarry stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, or if you experience throat pain, chest pain, or severe stomach pain.
  • Nexium I.V. is not recommended for use in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Nexium I.V. during pregnancy. It is unknown if Nexium I.V. is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Nexium I.V. .

Possible side effects of Nexium I.V. :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; dry mouth; gas; headache; indigestion; nausea; redness or itching at the injection site; stomach pain.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; difficulty swallowing; severe stomach pain; throat pain; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include blurred vision; confusion; drowsiness; excessive sweating; fast heartbeat; flushing.

Proper storage of Nexium I.V. :

For medicine that is not mixed: Store at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. After mixing, store the solution at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C), and use within either 6 or 12 hours, depending on the type of solution that Nexium I.V. is mixed in. If you are using Nexium I.V. at home, ask your health care provider for specific storage instructions. Keep Nexium I.V. out of the reach of children and away from pets.
