Nevirapine Suspension

Generic Name: Nevirapine Oral Suspension (neh-VYE-ra-peen)
Brand Name: Viramune

Life-threatening, sometimes fatal, liver problems and skin reactions have occurred in patients taking Nevirapine Suspension. Patients with higher CD4 counts and women (including pregnant women) and are at higher risk. Stop using Nevirapine Suspension and contact your health care provider at once if signs of liver problems (tiredness; general body discomfort; loss of appetite; nausea; yellowing of the skin or eyes; pale stools; liver tenderness) or skin reactions (severe rash with or without fever; general body discomfort; tiredness; muscle or joint aches; blisters; mouth sores; swelling or redness of the eye; swelling of the face) occur. The risk of both skin and liver side effects is highest during the first 18 weeks of therapy, but these side effects can happen at any time. It is important to be frequently monitored by your doctor for the entire time that you are taking Nevirapine Suspension.

Nevirapine Suspension is used for:

Treating HIV infection. Nevirapine Suspension is not a cure for HIV. It must be used in combination with other proven HIV medicines. If Nevirapine Suspension is taken alone to treat HIV infection, it may stop working. Contact your doctor for more information. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Nevirapine Suspension is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It works by blocking the growth of HIV.

Do NOT use Nevirapine Suspension if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Nevirapine Suspension
  • you have hepatitis or abnormal liver function test results
  • you are taking St. John"s wort or ketoconazole

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Nevirapine Suspension:

Some medical conditions may interact with Nevirapine Suspension. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have joint pain, general body discomfort, fatigue, fever, eye inflammation, fluid retention or swelling of the face, or muscle pain
  • if you have kidney or liver problems, swelling of the abdomen, joint pain, an eye infection, fluid retention in the face, fatigue, a high CD4 count, fever, muscle pain, general body discomfort, mouth sores, or skin sores or rash, or you are on dialysis

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Nevirapine Suspension. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Rifampin or St. John"s wort because the effectiveness of Nevirapine Suspension may be decreased
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), efavirenz, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir), ketoconazole, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), or narcotic analgesics (eg, morphine) because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Nevirapine Suspension may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Nevirapine Suspension:

Use Nevirapine Suspension as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Nevirapine Suspension comes with an additional patient information sheet called a Medication Guide. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Nevirapine Suspension refilled.
  • Nevirapine Suspension may be taken on an empty stomach or with food.
  • Shake gently before taking a dose.
  • Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure your dose.
  • If you use a dosing cup, rinse the cup with water and swallow the rinse as well.
  • If your dose is less than 1 teaspoon, use a dosing syringe.
  • Taking Nevirapine Suspension at the same time(s) each day will help you to remember to take it.
  • Continue to use Nevirapine Suspension even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
  • If you miss a dose of Nevirapine Suspension, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Nevirapine Suspension.

Important safety information:

  • Because HIV can quickly become resistant to Nevirapine Suspension when used alone, Nevirapine Suspension must be used with at least 1 other HIV medicine. Your doctor may change your treatment plan if Nevirapine Suspension stops working well.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose of Nevirapine Suspension without checking with your doctor. Exceeding the recommended dose of Nevirapine Suspension may not provide additional benefits, and may increase the risk of side effects.
  • Nevirapine Suspension is not a cure for HIV infection and patients may continue to acquire illnesses/infections associated with HIV. Remain under the care of your health care provider.
  • When your medicine supply begins to run low, get more from your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. This virus may develop resistance to Nevirapine Suspension if you stop taking it, even for a short period of time, or the virus may become harder to treat.
  • Nevirapine Suspension offers no protection from the transmission of HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Use barrier forms of contraception (eg, condoms) if you are infected with HIV.
  • Changes in body fat may occur while you are taking Nevirapine Suspension (eg, increased fat in the upper back and stomach areas, decreased fat in the arms and legs).
  • LAB TESTS, including liver function tests, heart and blood tests, and CD4 counts, may be done to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Caution is advised when using Nevirapine Suspension in CHILDREN because they may be more sensitive to its effects.
  • Nevirapine Suspension may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pills. To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control (eg, condoms).
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Nevirapine Suspension during pregnancy. Nevirapine Suspension is excreted in breast milk. HIV-infected mothers should not breast-feed their infants because of the risk of transmitting the HIV infection or Nevirapine Suspension to the baby.
