What is flunisolide nasal?

Flunisolide is a steroid. It prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.

Flunisolide is used nasally to treat the nasal symptoms of allergies and other seasonal reactions.

Flunisolide nasal may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about flunisolide nasal?

Do not use more of this medication than is prescribed for you. Too much may cause serious side effects.

Use flunisolide nasal on a regular basis for best results. It may take several weeks to get the maximum effect of this medication.

Who should not use flunisolide nasal?

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you have a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection of any kind. The absorption of this drug into your system can inhibit your body"s ability to fight off infections. You may not be able to use flunisolide nasal if you have an infection.

Flunisolide nasal is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether flunisolide nasal will harm an unborn baby. Do not use this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether flunisolide passes into breast milk. Do not use flunisolide nasal without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Flunisolide nasal is not approved for use by children younger than 6 years of age.

How should I use flunisolide nasal?

Use flunisolide nasal spray exactly as directed by your doctor. Read the information insert included with your medication. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

To use flunisolide nasal solution (Nasarel) or flunisolide nasal spray (Nasalide):

  • Prime the unit before using it for the first time, if you have not used it for 5 days or more, or if you have disassembled it for cleaning. To prime the unit, remove the white or green protective cap. Put two fingers on the shoulders of the pump unit and the thumb on the bottom of the bottle. Keep the tip of the bottle away form your face. Hold the bottle securely, and push the bottle with your thumb firmly and quickly until a fine If the spray is delivered in a stream of liquid, it may fail to provide maximum benefit and cause some discomfort. A fine mist can be produced only be a rapid and firm pumping action. spray or mist appears. This usually occurs after 5 or 6 pushes. The pump is now primed.

  • Gently blow your nose to clear your nostrils. If you are also using a decongestant spray, use it to open up your nasal passages before using flunisolide nasal. However, do not use a decongestant spray unless your doctor approves. Remove the white or green protective cap and be sure the pump has been primed. Place the spray tip into one nostril (the tip should not reach far into the nose), and bend your head forward. This allows the medicine to be sprayed toward the back of the nose. Hold the bottle with your thumb on the bottom of the bottle and two fingers on its shoulders. Rest the back of your index finger against your upper lip. Point the tip in your nose toward the back and outer side of your nose. Close your other nostril. Pump the spray into your nose by pushing the bottle with your thumb firmly and quickly, sniffing gently at the same time. Be careful that your fingers do not slip off the pump as you spray. If your doctor has prescribed 2 sprays in each nostril, pump the spray again. After spraying, remove the tip from your nose, and bend your head back for a few seconds. This lets the spray spread over the back of your nose. Repeat this process in your other nostril. You may feel some brief burning or stinging after using the spray.

  • Wipe off the spray tip with a tissue before replacing the white or green protective cap. Keep pump covered when not in use. If spray becomes clogged, unscrew the pump unit from the bottle. Do not attempt to clear it with a sharp or pointed object. To clean the pump, soak only the pump unit in warm water. Squirt the pump unit several times while holding under water. Make sure the pump unit is dry before reassembling. Prime the pump with 5 or 6 sprays before using again.

Do not use more of this medication than prescribed for you. Adults should never use more than 8 sprays in each nostril (400 mcg total) per day. Children under 14 years of age should never use more than 4 spray in each nostril (200 mcg total) per day. It may take a few weeks to see the effects of flunisolide nasal. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.

Store flunisolide nasal at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and use the next one as directed. Do not use a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose of this medication is not likely to occur. If you do think that an overdose has occurred, call an emergency room or poison control center .

What should I avoid while using flunisolide nasal?

Avoid items or activities that you know are allergens for you if they make your symptoms worse. Clean areas where dust or pet fur may aggravate your condition.

Avoid exposing yourself to known sources of infection. Stay away from people with chicken pox, measles, or any other type of . Your immune system may not be strong enough to fight off an infection while you are using flunisolide nasal. You should talk to your doctor if you know you have been exposed to chicken pox or measles.

Flunisolide nasal side effects

Serious side effects from flunisolide nasal are not likely to occur. Stop using flunisolide nasal and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives).

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely occur. Continue to use flunisolide nasal and talk to your doctor if you experience

  • stinging or burning of the nose;

  • sneezing after application;

  • yeast infection in the nose or throat (white patches);

  • sore throat;

  • cough;

  • bleeding nose;

  • perforated septum (inside center of nose);

  • watery eyes;

  • increased pressure in the eyes, glaucoma, or tearing of the eyes;

  • headache or lightheadedness;

  • nausea or vomiting;

  • nasal stuffiness or a runny nose; or

  • unpleasant (or loss of) taste or smell.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs will affect flunisolide nasal?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor and pharmacist about any other drugs you are taking. The use of other oral or inhaled steroids may increase your chance of side effects or overdose.

Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with flunisolide nasal. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
