Mometasone Spray


Generic Name: Mometasone Nasal Spray (moe-MET-a-sone)
Brand Name: Nasonex

Mometasone Spray is used for:

Treating and preventing allergic and nonallergic nasal symptoms including congestion, sneezing, itching, and runny nose. It is also used for treatment of growths in the nose (nasal polyps).

Mometasone Spray is a corticosteroid. It works by reducing inflammatory reactions in the nasal airway in response to allergens and irritants in the air.

Do NOT use Mometasone Spray if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Mometasone Spray.

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Mometasone Spray:

Some medical conditions may interact with Mometasone Spray. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have active or inactive tuberculosis or a positive skin test for tuberculosis
  • if you have diarrhea, herpes simplex in or around the eye, infections of the respiratory tract, measles or chickenpox, parasitic or viral infections, recently received a vaccination, untreated fungal or bacterial infections
  • if you have nasal septum ulcers, or recently had nasal surgery or nasal trauma

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Mometasone Spray. Because, little, if any, of Mometasone Spray is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Mometasone Spray may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Mometasone Spray:

Use Mometasone Spray as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • An extra patient leaflet is available with Mometasone Spray. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
  • Mometasone Spray is used in the nose.
  • Before using Mometasone Spray the first time, pump it up to 10 times or until a fine mist appears.
  • Shake well before each use.
  • Use Mometasone Spray at regular intervals exactly as prescribed by your health care provider.
  • Blow nose gently to clear passages. Spray into each nostril as directed.
  • Avoid spraying into the eyes or directly onto the nasal septum.
  • The maximum benefit of this medicine is usually achieved within 1 to 2 weeks. Contact your doctor if symptoms worsen or do not improve.
  • If Mometasone Spray is being used to prevent seasonal allergy symptoms, begin treatment 2 to 4 weeks before the expected start of the pollen season.
  • Continue to use Mometasone Spray even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
  • If you miss a dose of Mometasone Spray, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Mometasone Spray.

Important safety information:

  • If you have not had chickenpox, shingles, or measles, avoid contact with anyone who does. If you are exposed, contact your doctor at once.
  • Mometasone Spray may delay wound healing. If a nasal wound becomes infected, you should call your doctor.
  • This medicine should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 2 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed. Corticosteroids may affect growth rate in CHILDREN and teenagers in some cases. They may need regular growth checks while they use Mometasone Spray.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Mometasone Spray while you are pregnant. It is not known if Mometasone Spray is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Mometasone Spray, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Mometasone Spray:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Burning or irritation inside the nose; coughing; headache; muscle and joint pain; nosebleed or pink color to the mucus; painful menstruation; sinus inflammation; sore throat; upper respiratory tract infection; viral infection; vomiting; wheezing.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; growth suppression in children; white patches in the nose and the mouth.

Proper storage of Mometasone Spray:

Store Mometasone Spray at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Mometasone Spray out of the reach of children and away from pets.
