Generic Name: Methylergonovine Tablets (meth-ill-er-goe-NOE-veen)
Brand Name: Methergine

Methylergonovine is used for:

Preventing and treating bleeding after delivery of a baby. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Methylergonovine is a uterine stimulant. It works by increasing uterine contractions, which helps reduce blood loss after the baby is delivered.

Do NOT use Methylergonovine if:

you are allergic to any ingredient in Methylergonovine
you are pregnant
you have high blood pressure or blood poisoning
you are taking an azole antifungal (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole), certain protease inhibitors (eg, delavirdine, indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir), efavirenz, a ketolide antibiotic (eg, telithromycin), a macrolide antibiotic (eg, clarithromycin, erythromycin), or sumatriptan

Before using Methylergonovine :

Some medical conditions may interact with Methylergonovine . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
if you have a blood infection or a history of blood vessel problems, stroke, liver problems, kidney problems, or heart disease
if you have eclampsia or preeclampsia

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Methylergonovine . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

Clotrimazole, ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), fluconazole, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, grapefruit juice, nefazodone, saquinavir, or zileuton because they may increase the risk of Methylergonovine "s side effects
Azole antifungals (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole), certain protease inhibitors (eg, delavirdine, indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir), efavirenz, ketolide antibiotics (eg, telithromycin ), macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin, clarithromycin), or sumatriptan because the risk of severe blood vessel constriction and decreased oxygen to the brain and other tissues may be increased

How to use Methylergonovine :

Use Methylergonovine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Take Methylergonovine by mouth with or without food.
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may increase the risk of side effects from Methylergonovine . Talk to your doctor before including grapefruit or grapefruit juice in your diet while taking Methylergonovine .
Do not use Methylergonovine for more than 1 week unless instructed by your doctor.
If you miss a dose of Methylergonovine , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

Methylergonovine may cause dizziness. This effect may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Methylergonovine with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
Use Methylergonovine with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects.
Use Methylergonovine with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Methylergonovine if you are pregnant. It may cause harm to the fetus. Avoid becoming pregnant while you are taking it. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. Methylergonovine is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Methylergonovine , check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Methylergonovine :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Dizziness or lightheadedness; cramping of the uterus; headache; nausea; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blood in the urine; chest pain or tightness; hallucinations; irregular heartbeat; leg cramps; ringing in the ears; seizure; severe headache; shortness of breath.

Proper storage of Methylergonovine :

Store Methylergonovine below 77 degrees F (20 degrees C) in a tight, light-resistant container. Keep Methylergonovine out of the reach of children and away from pets.
