Brand Name: Canasa

Mesalamine Suppositories is used for:

Treating various forms of mild to moderate inflammation of the colon.

  • you are younger than 18 years of age and you have the flu or chicken pox
  • you are taking probenecid or sulfinpyrazone

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Mesalamine Suppositories:

Some medical conditions may interact with Mesalamine Suppositories. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have had a stroke, bleeding in the brain, or an aneurysm

How to use Mesalamine Suppositories:

Use Mesalamine Suppositories as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • If the suppository is too soft to use, put it in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes or run cold water over it. Then remove the wrapper and moisten the suppository with cool water. Lie down on your side. Use your finger to push the pointed end of the suppository well up into the rectum.
  • Do not handle the suppository too much. This will cause the suppository to melt before it can be inserted.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after using Mesalamine Suppositories.
  • For best results, keep the suppository inserted for at least 1 to 3 hours.
  • Continue to use Mesalamine Suppositories for the entire course of treatment.
  • If you miss a dose of Mesalamine Suppositories, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Mesalamine Suppositories.
