What is mequinol and tretinoin topical?

Mequinol stops the action of chemicals in the skin that create pigmentation or darkening. Tretinoin is a topical form of vitamin A. It helps the skin to renew itself more quickly and also reduces pigmentation.

Mequinol and tretinoin topical is used to treat solar lentigines, also known as brown "age" or "liver" spots.

Mequinol and tretinoin topical may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about mequinol and tretinoin topical?

Mequinol and tretinoin topical is the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that it is known to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not use mequinol and tretinoin topical if you are pregnant or if you are attempting to get pregnant. Talk to your doctor about adequate birth control measures if you could become pregnant during treatment with mequinol and tretinoin topical. Do not apply mequinol and tretinoin topical around the eyes, mouth, angles of the nose, mucous membranes, or on the surrounding, normally colored skin. If the product gets in the eyes, rinse them thoroughly with water and contact your doctor. Do not use mequinol and tretinoin topical on skin that is sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, or irritated, or on an open wound. It could make these conditions much worse. Wait until these conditions have healed before applying mequinol and tretinoin topical. Do not expose treated areas to sunlight, including sunlamps. Wear protective clothing and follow directions about sun avoidance during and after treatment with mequinol and tretinoin topical.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using mequinol and tretinoin topical?

Before using mequinol and tretinoin topical, tell your doctor if you

  • have a history, or a family history, of vitiligo (white patches of skin);

  • have eczema;

  • take prescription medications; or

  • are using other topical products with a strong drying effect on the skin, products with high concentrations of alcohol, astringents, spices or lime, medicated soaps or shampoos, permanent wave solutions, electrolysis, hair removal products or waxes, or other preparations or processes that my dry or irritate your skin.

You may not be able to use mequinol and tretinoin topical, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment.

How should I use mequinol and tretinoin topical?

Use mequinol and tretinoin topical exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

Mequinol and tretinoin topical is for external use only.

Apply mequinol and tretinoin topical using the applicator provided with the medication. Apply only enough to make the spot appear moist. Avoid applying so much medication that it runs or drips. Avoid getting the medication on the surrounding, normally colored skin. Do not shower or bathe the treated areas for at least 6 hours after application of mequinol and tretinoin topical.

Mequinol and tretinoin topical is usually applied twice daily, at least eight hours apart. Follow your doctor"s instructions.

Do not apply more frequent or larger doses of mequinol and tretinoin topical than is directed by your doctor. More medication will not lead to more rapid or better results, and may cause severe redness, peeling, discomfort, or excessive whitening of the skin. Do not apply mequinol and tretinoin topical around the eyes, mouth, angles of the nose, mucous membranes, or on the surrounding, normally colored skin. If the product gets in the eyes, rinse them thoroughly with water and contact your doctor. Do not use mequinol and tretinoin topical on skin that is sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, or irritated, or on an open wound. It could make these conditions much worse. Mequinol and tretinoin topical is flammable. Keep it away from heat or open flame.

Store mequinol and tretinoin topical at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Protect it from light by returning the bottle to the carton after each use.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Skip the missed dose of mequinol and tretinoin topical. Do not try to make it up. Return to your normal application schedule as soon as you can.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose of this medication is unlikely to be harmful. If you do suspect an overdose, or if mequinol and tretinoin topical has been ingested, call an emergency room or poison control center near you.

What should I avoid while using mequinol and tretinoin topical?

Do not expose treated areas to sunlight, including sunlamps. Wear protective clothing and follow directions about sun avoidance during and after treatment with mequinol and tretinoin topical.

Mequinol and tretinoin topical side effects

Serious side effects are not likely to occur. Stop using mequinol and tretinoin topical and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; or hives).

Stop using mequinol and tretinoin topical and contact your doctor regarding continued treatment if the age spots you are treating become darker with treatment, or if they become the same color or lighter than your normally colored skin.

You may experience some burning, stinging, tingling, itching, redness, dryness, peeling, crusting, rash, irritation, or lightening of the skin surrounding the spot being treated while using mequinol and tretinoin topical. If these side effects are excessive, talk to your doctor. You may need a lower dose or less frequent applications of mequinol and tretinoin topical.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs will affect mequinol and tretinoin topical?

Do not use mequinol and tretinoin topical without first talking to your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:
  • a diuretic (water pill) such as hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, HydroDiuril, Esidrix, Oretic, Microzide, others), chlorthalidone (Hygroton, Thalitone), chlorothiazide (Diuril), indapamide (Lozol), metolazone (Mykrox, Zaroxolyn), and others ;

  • a tetracycline antibiotic such as tetracycline (Sumycin, Achromycin), minocycline (Minocin), doxycycline (Monodox, Doryx, Vibramycin, Vibra-Tabs), and others;

  • a fluoroquinolone antibiotic such as enoxacin (Penetrex), lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), norfloxacin (Noroxin), and ofloxacin (Floxin);

  • a sulfa drug (sulfonamide) such as sulfamethoxazole (Gantanol, others), sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (Bactrim, Cotrim, Septra, Septra DS, others), sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin), and others; or

  • a phenothiazine including chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin), perphenazine (Trilafon), mesoridazine (Serentil), thioridazine (Mellaril), and others.

The drugs listed above may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. You may not be able to use mequinol and tretinoin topical, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.
