Meprobamate

Meprobamate is used for:

Treating short-term anxiety. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Meprobamate is an antianxiety agent. It works by affecting certain areas of the brain.

Do NOT use Meprobamate if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Meprobamate or to similar medicines (eg, carbromal, carisoprodol, mebutamate, tybamate)
• you have the blood disease porphyria
• you are taking sodium oxybate (GHB)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Meprobamate :

Some medical conditions may interact with Meprobamate . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have liver or kidney problems, nerve disease or damage, or a history of seizures (eg, epilepsy)
• if you have a history of alcohol or substance abuse/ dependence or suicidal thoughts or attempts

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Meprobamate . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Sodium oxybate (GHB) because the risk of side effects such as extreme drowsiness or prolonged sleep time may be increased by Meprobamate

How to use Meprobamate :

Use Meprobamate as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Meprobamate may be taken with or without food.
• Do not crush or chew tablets because of their bitter taste.
• If you miss a dose of Meprobamate , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Meprobamate .

Important safety information:

• Meprobamate may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Meprobamate . Using Meprobamate alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
• Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness (eg, sedatives, tranquilizers) while taking Meprobamate . Meprobamate will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
• Do not suddenly stop taking Meprobamate . When your doctor decides that you should stop taking Meprobamate , your dose should be gradually reduced over a period of 1 to 2 weeks.
• Use Meprobamate with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially drowsiness.
• Meprobamate is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 6 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Meprobamate has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Meprobamate during pregnancy. Meprobamate is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Meprobamate .

When used for long periods of time or at high doses, some people develop a need to continue taking Meprobamate . This is known as DEPENDENCE or addiction.

If you suddenly stop taking Meprobamate , you may experience WITHDRAWAL symptoms, including anxiety; appetite loss; confusion; hallucinations; loss of coordination; muscle twitching; seizures; sleeplessness; tremors; vomiting.

Possible side effects of Meprobamate :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Abnormal skin sensations; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; nausea; weakness.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); change in amount or frequency of urination; difficulty walking; exaggerated sense of well-being; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; inflammation of the mouth or rectum; loss of coordination; overexcitement; overstimulation; pounding in the chest; red, swollen, peeling, or blistered skin; severe tiredness or weakness; slurred speech; suicidal thoughts or attempts; swelling of the hands or feet; swollen lymph nodes; unusual bruising or bleeding; vision changes; vomiting.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Symptoms may include breathing difficulties; coma; fast or irregular heartbeat; loss of muscle coordination; severe dizziness; severe or persistent drowsiness; shock; sluggishness; slurred speech; stupor; suicidal attempts.

Store Meprobamate at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Meprobamate out of the reach of children and away from pets.
