Generic Name: Meningococcal Vaccine (A, C, Y, W-135) (ma-nin-ja-KOK-al)
Brand Name: Menomune

Menomune is used for:

Preventing infection caused by certain types of meningococcal bacteria (eg, meningococcal meningitis).

Menomune is a vaccine. It works by causing your immune system to produce antibodies that help to prevent infection by certain meningococcal bacteria.

Do NOT use Menomune if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Menomune , including thimerosal
  • you are ill or have an infection
  • you are also receiving a whole-cell pertussis or whole-cell typhoid vaccine

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Menomune :

Some medical conditions may interact with Menomune . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine (especially those that suppress the immune system), herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances (eg, latex rubber)
  • if you have immune system problems or have recently had or are planning to have any other vaccinations

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Menomune . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Medicines that suppress the immune system such as corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), cancer chemotherapy (eg, methotrexate), or cyclosporine because effectiveness of Menomune may be decreased
  • Whole-cell pertussis or whole-cell typhoid vaccine because the risk of side effects may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Menomune may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Menomune :

Use Menomune as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Menomune is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic.
  • If Menomune contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Menomune , contact your doctor immediately.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Menomune .

Important safety information:

  • Menomune may not work as well in patients who have immune system problems or are taking medicine that suppresses the immune system, such as corticosteroids (eg, prednisone). Tell your doctor if you have any immune system problems or other illnesses.
  • Protective antibody levels may be achieved within 7 to 10 days after vaccination.
  • Use Menomune with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 2 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: It is unknown if Menomune can cause harm to the fetus. If you become pregnant while taking Menomune , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Menomune during pregnancy. It is unknown if Menomune is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Menomune , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Menomune :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Chills; fever (low grade); headache; tenderness, pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).

Menomune is usually handled and stored by a health care provider. If you are using Menomune at home, store Menomune as directed by your pharmacist or health care provider.
