Magnesium Sulfate

Magnesium Sulfate is used for:

Treating low magnesium levels and maintaining the proper amount of magnesium in the body when used as part of intravenous (IV) feedings (eg, TPN). It is also used in pregnant women to control seizures due to certain complications of pregnancy (eg, severe toxemia) and to control high blood pressure, severe brain function problems (encephalopathy), and seizures in children who have sudden, severe inflammation of the kidneys (acute nephritis). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Magnesium Sulfate is a mineral. It works by replacing magnesium in patients who have low magnesium levels in the body due to illness or treatment with certain medicines. Magnesium Sulfate may also be used to treat seizures by decreasing certain nerve impulses to muscles.

Do NOT use Magnesium Sulfate if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Magnesium Sulfate
• you have a severe irregular heartbeat (eg, heart block) or if you are pregnant and expect to deliver the baby within 2 hours

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Magnesium Sulfate :

Some medical conditions may interact with Magnesium Sulfate . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have kidney problems or too much magnesium in the body

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Magnesium Sulfate . However, no specific interactions with Magnesium Sulfate are known at this time.

How to use Magnesium Sulfate :

Use Magnesium Sulfate as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Magnesium Sulfate is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Magnesium Sulfate at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
• If Magnesium Sulfate contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
• Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
• If you miss a dose of Magnesium Sulfate , contact your doctor immediately.

Important safety information:

• Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Magnesium Sulfate .
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant while using Magnesium Sulfate , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Magnesium Sulfate during pregnancy. If you are or may be pregnant, check with your doctor for instructions on using Magnesium Sulfate during pregnancy. It is unknown if Magnesium Sulfate is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding, check with your doctor to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Magnesium Sulfate :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. When used in small doses, no COMMON side effects have been reported with this product. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dizziness; flushing; irregular heartbeat; muscle paralysis or weakness; severe drowsiness; sweating.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include loss of muscle reflexes; severe dizziness and fainting; trouble breathing.

Store Magnesium Sulfate at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Magnesium Sulfate out of the reach of children and away from pets.
