It is used to relieve symptoms of depression such as feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt; loss of interest in daily activities; changes in appetite; tiredness; sleeping too much; insomnia; and thoughts of death or suicide. Amitriptyline is also sometimes used to treat certain types of pain. Chlordiazepoxide is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. It is used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders and to reduce the symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal. The combination, amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide, is used to treat depression and anxiety when they occur together. Amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. What is the most important information I should know about amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide?While you are taking amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide you may need to be monitored for worsening symptoms of depression and/or suicidal thoughts at the start of therapy or when doses are changed. This concern about the increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors may be greater if you are 18 years of age or younger and are taking amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide. In patients younger than 18 years, the period of risk may extend beyond start of therapy or when doses are changed. Your doctor may want you to monitor for the following symptoms: anxiety, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, severe restlessness, and mania (mental and/or physical hyperactivity). These symptoms may be associated with the development of worsening symptoms of depression and/or suicidal thoughts or actions. Contact your healthcare provider if you develop any new or worsening mental health symptoms during treatment with amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide. Do not stop taking amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.Dizziness may be more likely to occur when you rise from a sitting or lying position. Rise slowly to prevent dizziness and a possible fall. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide. Do not stop taking amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide without the approval of your doctor. It may be several weeks before you begin to feel better, and you may require continuous treatment for quite some time. Stopping suddenly may also cause withdrawal symptoms and make you uncomfortable. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not stop taking amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide without the approval of your doctor. However, if it is almost time for your next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of this medication. What happens if I overdose?Seek emergency medical attention.Symptoms of an amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide overdose include vomiting, sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, an irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, difficulty walking and talking, an appearance of being drunk, and unconsciousness. What should I avoid while taking amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide?Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. What other drugs will affect amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide?Amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including other antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines, sedatives (used to treat insomnia), pain relievers, other anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants. Tell your doctor about all medicines that you are taking, and do not take any medicine unless your doctor approves. Tell your doctor if you have a seizure disorder. Seizure medications may not be as effective during treatment with amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide. Blood pressure medications may be more effective and may result in very low blood pressure. Be alert for signs of low blood pressure (weakness, dizziness, fatigue) and talk to your doctor about your medication. Cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB) may increase the effects of amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide. Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking cimetidine so that your dosage of amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide can be adjusted if necessary.
