Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules

Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules is used for:

Treating and healing stomach ulcers, certain intestinal ulcers (duodenal ulcers), and severe irritation of the lining of the esophagus (erosive esophagitis). It is also used to treat and reduce the risk of stomach ulcers in certain patients who take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), to treat certain conditions in which the body makes too much stomach acid (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome), and to treat the symptoms of heartburn due to stomach acid backing up into the esophagus (GERD). It is also used with other medicines (eg, amoxicillin, clarithromycin) in certain patients who have a bacterial infection of the stomach (Helicobacter pylori infection) to decrease the risk of redeveloping duodenal ulcers. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules is a proton pump inhibitor. It works by decreasing stomach acid production.

Do NOT use Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules:

Some medical conditions may interact with Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have severe liver disease

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with this medicine. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Voriconazole because the actions and side effects of Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules may be increased
• Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) because the risk of bleeding may be increased
• HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir, indinavir) or imidazoles (eg, ketoconazole) because effectiveness of Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules may be decreased

How to use Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules:

Use Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Take Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.
• Swallow this medicine whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing.
• If you have trouble swallowing the capsule, you may open it and sprinkle the granules on 1 tablespoon of either applesauce, Ensure pudding, cottage cheese, yogurt, or strained pears. Swallow immediately.
• The capsules may also be opened and the granules inside mixed with a small amount (approximately 2 ounces) of apple juice, orange juice, or tomato juice. Do not use any other liquid. Mix the juice and granules briefly and swallow immediately. To make sure that the entire dose has been taken, refill the glass with about 2 or more ounces of juice and swallow the contents immediately.
• If you are using Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules through a feeding tube, mix the contents of the capsule in 40 mL of apple juice and immediately inject the mixture through the feeding tube and into the stomach. Inject additional apple juice to make sure all of the medicine is flushed out of the feeding tube and into the stomach.
• Do not prepare the mixture in advance and store for later use.
• If you are also taking sucralfate, take Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules at least 30 minutes before you take sucralfate.
• Use Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules regularly to receive the most benefit from it.
• Taking Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
• If you miss a dose of Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

• Use Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 1 year of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: It is unknown if Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules can cause harm to the fetus. If you become pregnant while taking Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules during pregnancy. It is unknown if Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules.

Possible side effects of Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; diarrhea; nausea.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); stomach pain.

Symptoms may include blurred vision; confusion; drowsiness; dry mouth; excessive sweating; fast heartbeat; flushing; headache; nausea; vomiting.

Store Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Lansoprazole Delayed-Release Capsules out of the reach of children and away from pets.
