Generic Name: Ertapenem (er-taehr-trah-PEN-em)
Brand Name: Invanz

Invanz is used for:

Treating moderate to severe infections caused by certain bacteria.

Invanz is an antibiotic. It works by killing bacteria by acting on certain proteins in the bacterial cell.

Do NOT use Invanz if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Invanz or any penicillin antibiotic (eg, amoxicillin, ampicillin) or any beta-lactam antibiotic (eg, imipenem).
  • you are receiving Invanz as an injection into your muscle and you are allergic to local anesthetics of the amide type (eg, lidocaine)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Invanz :

Some medical conditions may interact with Invanz . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines (including cephalosporin antibiotics), foods, or other substances
  • if you have kidney problems, urinary problems, a history of seizures or brain lesions, or a central nervous system disease or a history of central nervous system problems (eg, seizures, brain lesions)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Invanz . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Probenecid, because side effects may occur
  • Medicines that may increase your risk for seizures because side effects, such as seizures, may occur. Ask your doctor if you are unsure if any of your medicines may increase your seizure risk

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Invanz may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Invanz :

Use Invanz as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Invanz is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Invanz at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • If Invanz contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • To clear up your infection completely, continue using Invanz for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days.
  • If you miss a dose of Invanz , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Invanz .

Important safety information:

  • Invanz may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Invanz . Using Invanz alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • It is important to use Invanz for the full course of treatment. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of Invanz and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Invanz and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
  • Invanz is effective only against bacteria. It is not effective for treating viral infections (eg, the common cold).
  • If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools occur, contact your doctor immediately. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor.
  • Long-term or repeated use of Invanz may cause a second infection. Your doctor may want to change your medicine to treat the second infection. Contact your doctor if signs of a second infection occur.
  • LAB TESTS, including kidney function, liver function, and blood counts, may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Invanz is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 18 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Invanz during pregnancy. Invanz is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are taking Invanz , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Invanz :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; dizziness; headache; indigestion; nausea; sleeplessness; vomiting; weakness or tiredness.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; breathing problems; chest pain; fast heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; itching; mental or mood changes (eg, agitation, anxiety, confusion); pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site; seizures; severe diarrhea; severe stomach cramps or pain; swelling of hands or feet; tremors or abnormal muscle movements; unusual vaginal odor or discharge; vein swelling or tenderness; white patches in the mouth.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include diarrhea; dizziness; nausea.

Proper storage of Invanz :

Before mixing, store the powder below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. After mixing, store solution at room temperature, 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), and use within 6 hours, or store for 24 hours under refrigeration, 41 degrees F (5 degrees C), and use within 4 hours after removal from refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep Invanz out of the reach of children and away from pets.
