Halobetasol Cream


Generic Name: Halobetasol Cream and Ointment (hal-oh-BAY-ta-sol)
Brand Name: Ultravate

Halobetasol Cream is used for:

Reducing itching and inflammation associated with different skin conditions.

Halobetasol Cream is a super-high potency corticosteroid. It works by blocking the production of certain chemicals in the body that cause inflammation (eg, redness, itching, irritation).

Do NOT use Halobetasol Cream if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Halobetasol Cream

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Halobetasol Cream:

Some medical conditions may interact with Halobetasol Cream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have an acne rash or a rash around your mouth, measles, skin thinning, a skin infection, tuberculosis (TB), chickenpox, shingles, or a positive TB skin test, or you have been vaccinated recently

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Halobetasol Cream. Because little, if any, of Halobetasol Cream is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Halobetasol Cream may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Halobetasol Cream:

Use Halobetasol Cream as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Wash your hands before and after applying Halobetasol Cream.
  • Wash or soak the affected area before application because this may increase medicine penetration.
  • Apply a thin layer of medicine to the affected area. Rub the medicine in gently and completely.
  • Do not mix these products with other products.
  • Do not wrap the treated area with bandages or wear tight-fitting clothing over the treated area unless advised to do so by your doctor.
  • If you miss a dose of Halobetasol Cream, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Halobetasol Cream.

Important safety information:

  • Do not use Halobetasol Cream for more than 2 weeks unless directed by your doctor.
  • Keep Halobetasol Cream away from your eyes. If you get it in your eyes, wash them out with cool tap water and contact your doctor.
  • Do not use Halobetasol Cream for skin conditions without checking with your doctor.
  • Avoid prolonged use, especially near the eyes, on the face, on the genital and rectal areas, and in skin folds.
  • Skin infections may worsen while you are using Halobetasol Cream. It may be necessary to stop the use of Halobetasol Cream and treat the infection.
  • Halobetasol Cream is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 12 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Halobetasol Cream during pregnancy. It is unknown if Halobetasol Cream is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Halobetasol Cream, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Halobetasol Cream:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Burning; itching; stinging.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); change in color or texture of skin; excessive hair growth; increased amount of urine; increased itching; increased frequency of urination; increased thirst; irritation; redness.

Proper storage of Halobetasol Cream:

Store Halobetasol Cream at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Halobetasol Cream out of the reach of children and away from pets.
