Fosrenol


Generic Name: Lanthanum Carbonate (LAN-tha-num)
Brand Name: Fosrenol

Fosrenol is used for:

Reducing serum phosphate in patients with end-stage kidney disease. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Fosrenol is a phosphate binder. It works by blocking the absorption of phosphate, which reduces phosphate and calcium phosphate levels in the blood.

Do NOT use Fosrenol if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Fosrenol

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Fosrenol :

Some medical conditions may interact with Fosrenol . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have stomach or bowel problems (eg, an ulcer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease, bowel obstruction)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Fosrenol . However, no interactions are known at this time. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Fosrenol may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Fosrenol :

Use Fosrenol as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take this medicine with or immediately after a meal.
  • Chew thoroughly before swallowing. Do not swallow unchewed tablets.
  • Medicines known to interact with antacids may interact with Fosrenol and should not be taken within 2 hours of taking Fosrenol .
  • Take Fosrenol regularly to receive the most benefit from it.
  • Continue to take Fosrenol even if you feel well.
  • If you miss a dose of Fosrenol , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Fosrenol .

Important safety information:

  • Fosrenol may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Fosrenol . Using Fosrenol alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Do not take nonprescription antacids while taking Fosrenol without approval from your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Fosrenol . It could have an effect on the medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery you may receive.
  • If you are on dialysis, Fosrenol may affect your dialysis procedure. Be sure that the dialysis nurses and technicians know you are taking Fosrenol .
  • Lab tests, including blood phosphate levels, may be required to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Fosrenol is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Fosrenol if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. It is unknown if Fosrenol is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Fosrenol , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Fosrenol :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Bronchitis; constipation; diarrhea; headache; nausea; runny nose; stomach pain; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dizziness; fainting; fatigue; unusual weakness.

Proper storage of Fosrenol :

Store Fosrenol at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Keep Fosrenol out of the reach of children and away from pets.
