Fosinopril

Generic Name: Fosinopril (foe-SIN-oh-pril)
Brand Name: Monopril

DO NOT take Fosinopril if you are pregnant. Fosinopril can cause injury and possibly death to the developing fetus when used after the third month of pregnancy. Talk with your doctor at once if you suspect that you are pregnant.

Fosinopril is used for:

Treating high blood pressure. It may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines. It may also be used with other medicines for the treatment of congestive heart failure and certain other conditions as determined by your doctor that may not be listed in the professional package insert.

Fosinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by decreasing a chemical that tightens blood vessels. This causes blood vessels to relax (dilate), which lowers blood pressure and decreases the workload on the heart.

Do NOT use Fosinopril if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Fosinopril or any other ACE inhibitor (eg, enalapril)
  • you are pregnant

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Fosinopril :

Some medical conditions may interact with Fosinopril . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have or have ever had liver or kidney problems, kidney transplantation, or kidney dialysis
  • if you have bone marrow suppression, low blood counts, low blood pressure, low blood sodium, high blood potassium, narrowing or hardening of the arteries of the brain, dehydration, diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus), scleroderma, or a collagen vascular disease (ask your doctor if you are not sure)
  • if you are scheduled to have surgery or receive anesthesia

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Fosinopril . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Dextran sulfate, thiazide diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide) because the risk of serious damage to the kidney (eg, decreased urine output, weight gain) may be increased
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (eg, aspirin, ibuprofen, indomethacin, naproxen, celecoxib) because the effectiveness of Fosinopril may be decreased
  • Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, amiloride) because they may cause high blood potassium levels, resulting in listlessness, confusion, abnormal skin sensations in the arms and legs, heaviness of limbs, slowed heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, or stopping of the heart when used with Fosinopril
  • Lithium, sulfonylureas (eg, glyburide), or thiopurines (eg, azathioprine) because the risk of side effects may be increased by Fosinopril

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Fosinopril may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Fosinopril :

Use Fosinopril as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Fosinopril may be taken with or without food.
  • Taking Fosinopril at the same time each day will help you to remember to take it.
  • Do not take antacids containing aluminum, magnesium, or simethicone within 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking Fosinopril .
  • Drink plenty of fluids while taking Fosinopril . Not drinking enough fluids, as well as excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting, can lead to lightheadedness or fainting.
  • If you miss a dose of Fosinopril , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Fosinopril .

Important safety information:

  • Fosinopril may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Fosinopril . Using Fosinopril alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Fosinopril may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness.
  • Patients being treated for high blood pressure often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after beginning therapy. Continue taking your medication even though you may not feel quite "normal." Contact your doctor or pharmacist about any new symptoms.
  • Fosinopril may cause a dry, unproductive cough. This symptom usually stops after treatment with Fosinopril is stopped.
  • Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Fosinopril .
  • Do not use salt substitutes containing potassium without first talking with your doctor.
  • Black patients are at higher risk for certain side effects and may not respond as well to Fosinopril as patients of other races. If you are a black patient and your symptoms do not improve or worsen while you are taking Fosinopril , contact your doctor.
  • Diabetes patients - Fosinopril may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
  • LAB TESTS, including liver function, kidney function, blood counts, and blood pressure, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Fosinopril with caution in CHILDREN younger than 6 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: When Fosinopril is used after the third month of pregnancy, it can cause injury or even death to the developing fetus. Stop taking Fosinopril as soon as possible if you become pregnant. Fosinopril is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Fosinopril .
