Felbamate

Felbamate is used for:

Treating certain types of seizures.

Felbamate is an anticonvulsant. It works by controlling nerve impulses in the brain, which prevents or reduces some types of seizures.

Do NOT use Felbamate if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Felbamate or other carbamates
• you have a history of blood disorders, bone marrow depression, or liver problems

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Felbamate :

Some medical conditions may interact with Felbamate . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have kidney or liver problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Felbamate . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Carbamazepine or hydantoins (eg, phenytoin) because the effectiveness of Felbamate may be decreased
• Gabapentin because the actions and side effects of Felbamate may be increased
• Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), phenobarbital, or valproic acid because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
• Oral contraceptives (eg, birth control pills) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Felbamate

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Felbamate may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Felbamate :

Use Felbamate as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Felbamate may be taken with food if it upsets your stomach.
• Continue to use Felbamate even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
• If you miss a dose of Felbamate , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Felbamate .

Important safety information:

• Felbamate may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or double vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Felbamate . Using Felbamate alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
• Do not stop taking Felbamate without checking with your doctor. Seizures may return if you stop taking Felbamate .
• Felbamate may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pill. To prevent pregnancy, be sure to use an additional form of birth control while using Felbamate .
• LAB TESTS, including liver function tests and blood cell counts, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Use Felbamate with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects.
• Felbamate is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Felbamate during pregnancy. Felbamate is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Felbamate , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Felbamate :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; diarrhea; difficulty sleeping; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; itching; loss of appetite; nausea; tiredness; upset stomach; vomiting.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation; chest pain; dark urine; depression; fever, chills, or sore throat; mood swings; mouth sores; nervousness or anxiety; unusual bruising or bleeding; vision changes; weakness; yellowing of the eyes or skin.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include fast heartbeat; upset stomach.

Store Felbamate at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Felbamate out of the reach of children and away from pets.
