Exenatide

Exenatide is used for:

Improving blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Exenatide is used with other diabetes medicines (eg, metformin, sulfonylurea). Exenatide is not a substitute for insulin in patients who require insulin treatment.

Exenatide is an incretin mimetic. It works to lower blood sugar by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas. It also mimics the actions of some hormones in the body that lower blood sugar levels.

Do NOT use Exenatide if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Exenatide
• you have type 1 diabetes or increased ketone levels (diabetic)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Exenatide :

Some medical conditions may interact with Exenatide . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have severe kidney problems or stomach or food digestion problems (eg, gastroparesis)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Exenatide . However, no specific interactions with Exenatide are known at this time.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Exenatide may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Exenatide :

• Use Exenatide at any time within the hour before your morning and evening meals. Do not use it after your meal.
• Exenatide comes with an additional patient leaflet and user manual for the pen. Read it carefully.
• If you are also taking antibiotics or oral contraceptives, take them at least 1 hour before Exenatide . If you need to take the antibiotics or oral contraceptives with food, take them with a meal or snack when you are not using Exenatide .
• If you are using Exenatide at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
• Inject Exenatide under the skin (subcutaneous injection) of your upper leg (thigh), stomach area (abdomen), or upper arm.
• If Exenatide contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
• Do not store the pen with the needle attached. If the needle is left on, the medicine may leak from the pen or air bubbles may form in the cartridge.
• Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
• If you miss a dose of Exenatide , skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

• Exenatide may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Exenatide .
• Carry an identification card at all times that says you have diabetes. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly according to your doctor"s directions. If your blood sugar level is often higher than it should be and you are taking Exenatide according to directions, check with your doctor.
• When taken with sulfonylureas, Exenatide may cause low blood sugar (eg, increased heartbeat, headache, chills, sweating, tremor, increased hunger, changes in vision, nervousness, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting). It is a good habit to carry glucose tablets or gel to treat low blood sugar. If you do not have a reliable source of glucose available, eat a quick source of sugar such as table sugar, honey, or candy, or drink a glass of orange juice or non-diet soda to quickly raise your blood sugar level. Tell your doctor immediately about the reaction. To prevent low blood sugar, eat meals on a regular schedule and do not skip meals.
• Exenatide may reduce your appetite, the amount of food you eat, and your weight. No dose change is needed for these side effects.
• Be sure to follow the diet and exercise program prescribed by your doctor.
• LAB TESTS, including hemoglobin A_1C checks and blood sugar levels, will be required to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Exenatide is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant while taking Exenatide , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Exenatide during pregnancy. It is unknown if Exenatide is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while using Exenatide .

Possible side effects of Exenatide :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Decreased appetite; diarrhea; dizziness; feeling jittery; headache; indigestion; nausea; vomiting.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chills; confusion; drowsiness; fainting; fast heartbeat; headache; increased hunger, thirst, or urination; irritability; nervousness; sweating; tremor; vision problems; weakness.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Store in the refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Protect from light. Do not store with the needle attached to the pen. Discard after 30 days after the first use, even if some medicine remains in the pen. Do not freeze. Do not use if the pen has been frozen. Do not use past the expiration date. Keep Exenatide out of the reach of children and away from pets.
