Generic Name: Emtricitabine Capsules (em-trye-SYE-ta-been)
Brand Name: Emtriva

Emtriva may infrequently cause severe, sometimes fatal, side effects. A metabolic disorder, called lactic acidosis, or severe liver problems may occur. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience dark urine, unusual fatigue, yellowing of eyes or skin, rapid breathing, muscle aches, stomach or abdominal pain, or unusual drowsiness.

Emtriva has not been approved to treat hepatitis B infection. Safety and effectiveness of Emtriva have not been established in patients who have both HIV and hepatitis B. Severe worsening of hepatitis B has been reported in patients who have stopped taking Emtriva . Lab tests, including liver function tests, may be performed for several months after you stop taking Emtriva if you have both HIV and hepatitis B.


Emtriva is used for:

Treating HIV infection. It must be used in combination with other HIV medicines.

Emtriva is an antiviral medicine. It works by blocking a protein that helps HIV spread, which reduces HIV levels in the blood.

Do NOT use Emtriva if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Emtriva

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Emtriva :

Some medical conditions may interact with Emtriva . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have chronic hepatitis B, kidney problems, lactic acidosis, liver problems (eg, enlarged liver), or abnormal liver function test results

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Emtriva . However, no specific interactions with Emtriva are known at this time.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Emtriva may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Emtriva :

Use Emtriva as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Emtriva may be taken with or without food.
  • Emtriva comes with an additional patient leaflet. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Emtriva refilled. Ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions that you may have about Emtriva .
  • Take Emtriva at the same time each day to keep a constant amount of medicine in your body. Do not skip doses of Emtriva .
  • If you miss a dose of Emtriva , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. It is important not to miss doses of Emtriva .

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Emtriva .

Important safety information:

  • Emtriva may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Emtriva . Using Emtriva alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose without checking with your doctor. Exceeding the prescribed dose of Emtriva may not provide additional benefits and may increase the risks of side effects.
  • Do not stop taking Emtriva (or other HIV medicines) without first checking with your doctor. This may cause the amount of the virus to increase or may make the virus harder to treat.
  • Emtriva is not a cure for HIV infection and patients may continue to acquire illnesses and infections associated with HIV. Remain under the care of your doctor.
  • Emtriva offers no protection from the transmission of HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Use barrier forms of contraception (eg, condoms) if you are infected with HIV. Do not share needles, other injection equipment, or personal items such as toothbrushes or razor blades.
  • Emtriva may not prevent other infections. If your health changes, check with your doctor.
  • LAB TESTS, including liver and kidney function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Emtriva with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 3 months of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Emtriva during pregnancy. HIV-infected mothers should not breast-feed their infants because of the risk of transmitting the HIV infection or Emtriva .

Possible side effects of Emtriva :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Abnormal skin sensation; change in color of skin on palms or soles of feet; changes in body fat; cough; depression; diarrhea; dizziness; headache; indigestion; joint or muscle pain; nausea; runny nose; sleeplessness; stomach pain; vomiting; weakness or lack of energy.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dark urine; fever, chills, or sore throat; rapid breathing; severe or persistent cough; severe weakness; unusual fatigue; yellowing of the eyes or skin.

Proper storage of Emtriva :

Store Emtriva at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Emtriva out of the reach of children and away from pets.
