Echothiophate Eye Drops

Echothiophate Eye Drops is used for:

Treating certain types of glaucoma. It is also used for diagnosing and treating certain types of crossed eyes. It may also be used for certain conditions as determined by your doctor.

Echothiophate Eye Drops is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by increasing the effects of a certain chemical found naturally in the eyes, which lowers the pressure in the eyes and causes the pupil to become smaller.

Do NOT use Echothiophate Eye Drops if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Echothiophate Eye Drops
• you have narrow-angle glaucoma
• you have inflammation of the eye

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Echothiophate Eye Drops:

Some medical conditions may interact with this medicine. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have myasthenia gravis, seizures (eg, epilepsy), certain nerve problems (vagotonia), urinary problems (eg, blockage, trouble urinating), Parkinson disease or similar condition, asthma, low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, or if you have recently had a heart attack
• if you have stomach or bowel problems (eg, ulcer, stomach or bowel muscle problems) or a history of eye problems (eg, retinal detachment, inflammation of the eye)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Echothiophate Eye Drops. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Succinylcholine because risk of severe breathing or heart problems may be increased
• Cholinesterase inhibitors (eg, pyridostigmine) because side effects may be increased by Echothiophate Eye Drops

How to use Echothiophate Eye Drops:

Use Echothiophate Eye Drops as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Echothiophate Eye Drops is for use in the eye only. Do not get Echothiophate Eye Drops in your nose or mouth.
• To use Echothiophate Eye Drops, wash your hands. Tilt your head back. Using your index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch. Drop the medicine into the pouch and gently close your eyes. Immediately use your finger to apply pressure to the inside corner of the eye and continue to apply pressure for 1 to 2 minutes after using the medicine. Do not blink. Remove excess medicine around your eye with a clean tissue, being careful not to touch your eye. Wash your hands to remove any medicine that may be on them. To prevent germs from entering your medicine, do not touch the applicator tip to any surface, including your eye. Keep the container tightly closed.
• If Echothiophate Eye Drops accidentally spills on your skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water.
• If you miss a dose of Echothiophate Eye Drops, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

• Echothiophate Eye Drops may cause blurred vision or difficulty adjusting to dim lighting. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Echothiophate Eye Drops.
• Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Echothiophate Eye Drops.
• If you are exposed to carbamate- or organophosphate-type insecticides and pesticides, there may be increased side effects due to absorption of pesticide through the skin or lungs. During periods of exposure, you should wear respiratory masks and wash or change clothes frequently while using Echothiophate Eye Drops.
• Echothiophate Eye Drops may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone you know may have taken Echothiophate Eye Drops by mouth, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
• LAB TESTS, including frequent eye examinations, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Echothiophate Eye Drops during pregnancy. It is unknown if Echothiophate Eye Drops is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Echothiophate Eye Drops.

Possible side effects of Echothiophate Eye Drops:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Blurred vision; headache or browache; irritation or redness of the eye; stinging or burning; tearing; twitching of eyelid.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; diarrhea; difficulty controlling your bladder; eye cysts; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; increased amount of saliva (spit); muscle weakness; severe or unusual sweating.

Store Echothiophate Eye Drops in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Do not freeze. Echothiophate Eye Drops may be stored at room temperature, 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), for up to 4 weeks. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Echothiophate Eye Drops out of the reach of children and away from pets.
