Duo-Vil 2-10


Generic Name: Amitriptyline/Perphenazine (am-ee-TRIP-tih-leen/per-FEN-uh-zeen)
Brand Name: Duo-Vil 2-10

Antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in children and teenagers. The risk may be greater during the first few months that patients take Duo-Vil 2-10 . Be sure that the benefits of using Duo-Vil 2-10 outweigh the risks. Talk with the patient"s doctor if you have any questions.

Family and caregivers must closely observe patients who take Duo-Vil 2-10 . It is important to keep in close contact with the patient"s doctor. Tell the doctor right away if the patient has symptoms like worsened depression, suicidal thoughts, or changes in behavior.


Duo-Vil 2-10 is used for:

Treating anxiety and depression.

Duo-Vil 2-10 is a phenothiazine and tricyclic antidepressant combination. It works by altering the levels of naturally occurring chemicals in the brain.

Do NOT use Duo-Vil 2-10 if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Duo-Vil 2-10
  • you have certain types of brain damage
  • you have blood disorders, liver damage, decreased bone marrow function, or a recent heart attack
  • you are taking astemizole, cisapride, dofetilide, terfenadine, or tramadol
  • you have taken furazolidone or a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (eg, phenelzine) within the last 14 days

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Duo-Vil 2-10 :

Some medical conditions may interact with Duo-Vil 2-10 . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a history of breast cancer, seizures, asthma, lung problems (eg, emphysema), trouble urinating, alcohol abuse, depression, or suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • if you have a lung infection, heart or blood disease, Reye syndrome, Parkinson disease, glaucoma, high or low blood pressure, prostate problems, or an overactive thyroid
  • if you are undergoing electroshock therapy (ECT)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Duo-Vil 2-10 . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Anticholinergics (eg, benztropine), antihistamines (eg, diphenhydramine), barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, cimetidine, disulfiram, fluconazole, mibefradil, opiates (eg, codeine), phenothiazines, quinidine, terbinafine, or valproic acid because they may increase the risk of Duo-Vil 2-10 "s side effects
  • Arsenic, astemizole, butyrophenones, cisapride, dofetilide, droperidol, furazolidone, haloperidol, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), MAO inhibitors (eg, phenelzine), pimozide, quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (eg, venlafaxine), streptogramins, terfenadine, or tramadol because the risk of severe heart, nervous system, or muscle problems or seizures may be increased
  • Benzodiazepines because they may decrease this medicine"s effectiveness
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), hydantoins, or sympathomimetics (eg, pseudoephedrine) because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Duo-Vil 2-10
  • Clonidine, guanethidine, guanfacine, levodopa, or pergolide because their effectiveness may be decreased by Duo-Vil 2-10

How to use Duo-Vil 2-10 :

Use Duo-Vil 2-10 as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Duo-Vil 2-10 comes with an extra patient information sheet called a Medication Guide. Read it carefully. Read it again each time you get Duo-Vil 2-10 refilled.
  • Take Duo-Vil 2-10 by mouth with or without food.
  • If you miss a dose of Duo-Vil 2-10 , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Duo-Vil 2-10 .

Important safety information:

  • Duo-Vil 2-10 may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or fainting. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Duo-Vil 2-10 with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using Duo-Vil 2-10 ; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness.
  • Duo-Vil 2-10 may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
  • Duo-Vil 2-10 may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Duo-Vil 2-10 . Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
  • Do not become overheated in hot weather or while you are being active; heatstroke may occur.
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a possibly fatal syndrome that can be caused by Duo-Vil 2-10 . Symptoms may include fever; stiff muscles; confusion; abnormal thinking; fast or irregular heartbeat; and sweating. Contact your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms.
  • Some patients who take Duo-Vil 2-10 may develop muscle movements that they cannot control. This is more likely to happen in elderly patients, especially women. The chance that this will happen or that it will become permanent is greater in those who take Duo-Vil 2-10 in higher doses or for a long time. Muscle problems may also occur after short-term treatment with low doses. Tell your doctor at once if you have muscle problems with your arms; legs; or your tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (eg, tongue sticking out, puffing of cheeks, mouth puckering, chewing movements) while taking Duo-Vil 2-10 .
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Duo-Vil 2-10 before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Lab tests, including liver and kidney function and complete blood cell counts, may be performed while you use Duo-Vil 2-10 . These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Duo-Vil 2-10 with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects.
  • Duo-Vil 2-10 should not be used in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: It is not known if Duo-Vil 2-10 can cause harm to the fetus. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Duo-Vil 2-10 while you are pregnant. Duo-Vil 2-10 is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Duo-Vil 2-10 .

If you stop taking Duo-Vil 2-10 suddenly, you may have WITHDRAWAL symptoms. These may include dizziness, nausea, upset stomach, and vomiting.

Possible side effects of Duo-Vil 2-10 :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Blurred vision; changes in color of cornea and lens; changes in menstrual cycle; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; flushing; headache; lack of energy; loss of appetite; nausea; sleeplessness; stuffy nose; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation; altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; breast growth; changes in vision or other vision problems; chest pain; confusion; difficulty sleeping; difficulty speaking or swallowing; difficulty urinating; drooling from the mouth; excessive drowsiness; excessive hunger, thirst, or urination; fainting; feeling of irritability or hostility; fever; impulsive behavior or other unusual changes in behavior; inability to urinate; involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth, or jaw, sometimes with involuntary movements of the arms and legs; loss of bladder control; mental or mood changes; muscle rigidness or stiffness; nightmares; panic attacks; rapid or irregular heartbeat; restlessness; ringing in the ears; severe nervousness or anxiety; severe restlessness; severe stomach pain; sore throat; suicidal thoughts; sweating; swelling of the legs and feet; tremors; uncoordinated movements; weakness in the arms or legs; worsening feelings of depression; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Symptoms may include confusion; dilated pupils; drowsiness; fever; hallucinations; lightheadedness; muscle rigidity; rapid pulse; seizures; uncontrollable movements of the tongue, mouth, or face; vomiting.

Proper storage of Duo-Vil 2-10 :

Store Duo-Vil 2-10 at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Duo-Vil 2-10 out of the reach of children and away from pets.
