Doxycycline

Generic Name: Doxycycline Dental Tablets (dox-ee-SYE-kleen)
Brand Name: Periostat

Doxycycline is used for:

Treating periodontitis, a disease that attacks the gum, bone, and around the teeth.

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by suppressing the enzymes that cause periodontal breakdown and prevents the enzymes from further breaking down the gum and bone tissue around the teeth.

Do NOT use Doxycycline if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Doxycycline or to other tetracycline antibiotics
  • you are currently taking acitretin, isotretinoin, methotrexate, a blood thinner (eg, warfarin), or typhoid vaccine

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Doxycycline:

Some medical conditions may interact with Doxycycline. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have diarrhea, a stomach infection, or porphyria
  • if you have a history of oral yeast infections

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Doxycycline. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, cimetidine, colestipol, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), or rifampin because they may decrease Doxycycline"s effectiveness
  • Acitretin, insulin, isotretinoin, methotrexate, methoxyflurane, blood thinners (eg, warfarin), or theophylline because the side effects and toxic effects may be increased by Doxycycline
  • Penicillins (eg, amoxicillin), birth control pills, or typhoid vaccine because their effectiveness may be decreased by Doxycycline

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Doxycycline may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Doxycycline:

Use Doxycycline as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Doxycycline by mouth on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.
  • Do not take an antacid that has aluminum, calcium, or magnesium in it; bismuth subsalicylate; iron; zinc; or multivitamins with minerals within 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take Doxycycline.
  • Do not eat or drink dairy products within 1 hour before or 2 hours after you take Doxycycline.
  • To clear up your infection completely, take Doxycycline for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.
  • Drink plenty of nondairy fluid with Doxycycline to wash it down and avoid the risk of sore throat.
  • Take Doxycycline twice daily (every 12 hours), preferably in the morning and evening.
  • If you miss a dose of Doxycycline, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Doxycycline.

Important safety information:

  • Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Doxycycline. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).
  • Doxycycline only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).
  • Be sure to use Doxycycline for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.
  • Long-term or repeated use of Doxycycline may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.
  • Doxycycline may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Doxycycline. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
  • Lab tests, including liver function, kidney function, and complete blood counts, may be performed while you use Doxycycline. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Doxycycline should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 8 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed. Use during tooth development may leave a permanent yellow-gray-brown discoloration.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Doxycycline has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Doxycycline while you are pregnant. Doxycycline is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Doxycycline.
