Doxepin Cream


Generic Name: Doxepin Cream (DOX-e-pin)
Brand Name: Zonalon

Doxepin Cream is used for:

Relieving moderate itching caused by certain skin conditions.

Doxepin Cream is an antipruritic cream. It is not known exactly how it works. It may block histamine to relieve itching.

Do NOT use Doxepin Cream if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Doxepin Cream
  • you have certain prostate problems (eg, asymptomatic prostatic hypertrophy), uncontrolled glaucoma, or trouble urinating (urinary retention)
  • you are taking cisapride, clonidine, dofetilide, H1 antagonists (eg, astemizole, terfenadine), or ibutilide, or you have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (eg, furazolidone, phenelzine, isocarboxazid) within the past 14 days

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Doxepin Cream:

Some medical conditions may interact with Doxepin Cream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a history of heart problems, seizures (eg, epilepsy), overactive thyroid, glaucoma, or increased pressure in the eyes, prostate problems (eg, benign prostatic hypertrophy [BPH]),certain blood problems (eg, porphyria), suicidal thoughts or attempts, or a history of alcohol abuse

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Doxepin Cream. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Antiarrhythmics (eg, quinidine, propafenone, flecainide), antifungal medicines (eg, fluconazole, terbinafine), carbamazepine, cimetidine, mibefradil, phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine, thioridazine), or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine, sertraline) because side effects of Doxepin Cream may be increased
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), cisapride, clonidine, dofetilide, guanadrel, H1 antagonists (eg, astemizole, terfenadine), ibutilide, sulfonylureas (eg, tolazamide, glipizide), sympathomimetics (eg, phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine), or tramadol because the side effects may be increased by Doxepin Cream
  • Clonidine, guanadrel, guanethidine, or guanfacine because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased
  • MAO inhibitors (eg, furazolidone, phenelzine, isocarboxazid) because severe toxic effects may occur

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Doxepin Cream may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Doxepin Cream:

Use Doxepin Cream as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Doxepin Cream is for external use only.
  • Wash and completely dry the affected area. Apply a thin film to the affected area and gently rub it in.
  • Wash your hands immediately after using Doxepin Cream unless the medicine is being used to treat a skin condition on your hands.
  • Do not bandage or otherwise cover the treated area unless directed to do so by your doctor. Avoid tight-fitting clothes on the treated area.
  • If you miss a dose of Doxepin Cream, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Doxepin Cream.

Important safety information:

  • Doxepin Cream may cause drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Doxepin Cream. Using Doxepin Cream alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • This medicine will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
  • Limit your alcohol consumption while taking Doxepin Cream.
  • Avoid getting Doxepin Cream in your eyes or on the inside of your nose or mouth.
  • Patients of African decent are at higher risk for certain side effects, and may not respond as well to Doxepin Cream as patients of other races. If you are of African decent and your symptoms do not improve or worsen while on Doxepin Cream, contact your doctor.
  • Use Doxepin Cream with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially drowsiness and confusion.
  • Doxepin Cream is not recommended for use in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Doxepin Cream during pregnancy. It is unknown if Doxepin Cream is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Doxepin Cream.

Possible side effects of Doxepin Cream:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Abnormal skin sensations; burning and stinging at the application site; changes in emotions; confusion; dizziness; drowsiness; dry and tight skin; dry mouth and lips; fatigue; headache; itching; swelling; taste changes; thirst.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blurred vision; rapid or pounding heartbeat; severe burning and stinging at the application site.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Doxepin Cream may be harmful if swallowed.

Proper storage of Doxepin Cream:

Store Doxepin Cream at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Doxepin Cream out of the reach of children and away from pets.
