Generic Name: Propofol (PROE-poe-fole)
Brand Name: Diprivan

Diprivan is used for:

Starting or maintaining anesthesia during certain surgeries, tests, or procedures. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Diprivan is a general anesthetic. It is unknown exactly how Diprivan works.

Do NOT use Diprivan if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Diprivan

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Diprivan :

Some medical conditions may interact with Diprivan . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have inflammation of the pancreas, high lipid levels in the blood, or epilepsy

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Diprivan . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam), narcotic pain relievers (eg, morphine), or other sedatives (eg, chloral hydrate) because they may increase the risk of side effects from Diprivan

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Diprivan may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Diprivan :

Use Diprivan as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Diprivan is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic.
  • If you miss a dose of Diprivan , contact your doctor immediately.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Diprivan .

Important safety information:

  • Diprivan may cause drowsiness or uncoordinated movements for up to 12 hours. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous for at least 24 hours following surgery. Using Diprivan alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness (eg, sedatives, tranquilizers) for 12 hours after taking Diprivan . Diprivan will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
  • Diprivan contains benzyl alcohol, a preservative. Do not use Diprivan in NEWBORNS or INFANTS because serious and sometimes fatal nervous system problems and other side effects may occur.
  • Diprivan is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 3 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Diprivan may cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Diprivan during pregnancy. Diprivan is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Diprivan .

Possible side effects of Diprivan :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Change in mood or emotions; dizziness; drowsiness; lack of coordination.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); cough; feeling faint; itching; pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site; wheezing.

Proper storage of Diprivan :

Diprivan is usually handled and stored by a health care provider. Keep Diprivan out of the reach of children and away from pets.
