Diflucan Solution

Generic Name: Fluconazole Injection Solution (flew-KON-ah-zole)
Brand Name: Diflucan

Diflucan Solution is used for:

Treating and preventing certain yeast and fungal infections. Diflucan Solution may also be used for certain conditions as determined by your doctor that may not be listed in the professional package insert.

Diflucan Solution is an azole antifungal. It kills sensitive fungi by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane.

Do NOT use Diflucan Solution if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Diflucan Solution
  • you are currently taking serotonin (5-HT1) receptor agonists (eg, sumatriptan), cisapride, ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), erythromycin, antihistamines (eg, astemizole, terfenadine), or pimozide

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Diflucan Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Diflucan Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you are immunocompromised or have liver or kidney problems
  • if you have allergies to other azole antifungals (eg, itraconazole)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Diflucan Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Rifampin because its effectiveness and the effectiveness of Diflucan Solution may be decreased
  • Warfarin because risk of bleeding may be increased
  • Antihistamines (eg, terfenadine), cisapride, ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), pimozide, serotonin receptor agonists (eg, sumatriptan), theophyllines, tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline), macrolides (eg, erythromycin, tacrolimus), or quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin), because risk of severe heart effects may be increased
  • Methadone, narcotics (eg, morphine, codeine), or benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam), because actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased, resulting in increased risk of sedation and breathing difficulties
  • Cyclosporine, phenytoin, or sulfonylureas (eg, glipizide) because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Diflucan Solution may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Diflucan Solution:

Use Diflucan Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Diflucan Solution is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Diflucan Solution at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • Diflucan Solution comes with an additional patient information leaflet. Read it carefully.
  • To clear up your infection completely, continue using Diflucan Solution for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days. Do not miss any doses.
  • Diflucan Solution works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
  • Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of them properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full.
  • If you miss a dose of Diflucan Solution, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Diflucan Solution.

Important safety information:

  • Diflucan Solution may cause dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Diflucan Solution. Using Diflucan Solution alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Diflucan Solution has been known to cause rare cases of serious liver damage, including death, mainly in patients with serious medical conditions. Liver damage caused by Diflucan Solution has not been attributed to total daily dose, length of therapy, or sex or age of the patient. This type of liver damage may or may not be reversible when Diflucan Solution is stopped. If you notice any of the following, contact your doctor immediately: swollen or tender abdomen, yellowing of the skin or eyes.
  • Diflucan Solution may decrease the effectiveness of your oral contraceptive (birth control pill). To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control (eg, condoms).
  • It is important to use Diflucan Solution for the full course of treatment. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of Diflucan Solution and may increase the risk that the bacteria/fungus will no longer be sensitive to Diflucan Solution and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
  • LAB TESTS, including blood urea nitrogen and liver and kidney function tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Diflucan Solution with extreme caution in ELDERLY patients.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Diflucan Solution during pregnancy. Diflucan Solution is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Diflucan Solution, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
