Dicyclomine Capsules


Generic Name: Dicyclomine Capsules and Tablets (dye-SYE-kloe-meen)
Brand Name: Examples include Bentyl and Triactin

Dicyclomine Capsules is used for:

Treatment of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Dicyclomine Capsules is an anticholinergic. It works by blocking a chemical in the smooth muscle of the stomach and intestines causing them to relax, which reduces cramping.

Do NOT use Dicyclomine Capsules if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Dicyclomine Capsules
  • you have blockage of the esophagus, stomach, intestine, or urinary tract
  • you have heart problems due to severe bleeding
  • you have glaucoma
  • you have inflammation of the esophagus due to acid reflux, loss of strength in the intestinal muscles, or chronic inflammation and ulceration of the bowels
  • you have myasthenia gravis (a condition in which the muscles become progressively paralyzed)
  • you are breast-feeding

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Dicyclomine Capsules:

Some medical conditions may interact with Dicyclomine Capsules. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines or other substances
  • if you have chronic inflammation or ulcers of the bowel, diarrhea, enlargement of the prostrate, hiatal hernia, kidney or liver disease, a nervous system disease, overactive thyroid, or urinary blockage or retention
  • if you have heart disease, heart failure, history of rapid heartbeat, or high blood pressure

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Dicyclomine Capsules. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Amantadine, antiarrhythmics (eg, quinidine), antihistamines (eg, diphenhydramine), phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), benzodiazepines (eg, diazepam), monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (eg, phenelzine), narcotic pain medicine (eg, meperidine), nitrates (eg, nitroglycerin, isosorbide), nitrites (eg, sodium nitrite), sympathomimetics (eg, pseudoephedrine), or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline) because the side effects of Dicyclomine Capsules may be increased
  • Phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine) because effectiveness may be decreased by Dicyclomine Capsules
  • Digoxin because the effects and side effects may be increased by Dicyclomine Capsules

How to use Dicyclomine Capsules:

Use Dicyclomine Capsules as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • If you are also taking antacids, you may need to separate them from Dicyclomine Capsules. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
  • Take Dicyclomine Capsules on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before eating unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
  • Use Dicyclomine Capsules on a regular schedule around the clock, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
  • If you miss a dose of Dicyclomine Capsules, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Dicyclomine Capsules.

Important safety information:

  • Dicyclomine Capsules may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Dicyclomine Capsules. Using Dicyclomine Capsules alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness (eg, sedatives, tranquilizers) while taking Dicyclomine Capsules. Dicyclomine Capsules will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
  • Dicyclomine Capsules may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit or stand up slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness.
  • Do not become overheated in hot weather or during exercise or other activities because heatstroke may occur.
  • Dicyclomine Capsules may cause your eyes to become sensitive to sunlight. Wearing sunglasses may help.
  • Dicyclomine Capsules is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 6 months of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Dicyclomine Capsules during pregnancy. Dicyclomine Capsules is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Dicyclomine Capsules.

Possible side effects of Dicyclomine Capsules:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Blurred vision; constipation; decreased sweating; difficulty sleeping; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; headache; lightheadedness; loss of taste; nausea; nervousness.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation; confusion; diarrhea; difficulty focusing your eyes; difficulty moving; difficulty speaking; difficulty urinating; disorientation; exaggerated sense of well-being; fainting; hallucinations; pounding in the chest, rapid heartbeat; short-term memory loss; vomiting; unusual weakness.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include: blurred vision; convulsions (seizures); difficulty breathing; dilated pupils; disorientation; excessive thirst; flushed, hot, dry skin; hallucinations or unusual behavior; muscle weakness; nausea; rapid heartbeat and breathing; restlessness; unusual dizziness or drowsiness; unusually dry mouth; vomiting.

Proper storage of Dicyclomine Capsules:

Store at room temperature, below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Dicyclomine Capsules out of the reach of children and away from pets.
