What is citric acid and sodium citrate?

Citric acid and sodium citrate are alkalinizing agents that make the urine less acidic.

Citric acid and sodium citrate is used in the treatment of certain kidney disorders, including kidney stones, and for gout.

Citric acid and sodium citrate may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about citric acid and sodium citrate?

Take citric acid and sodium citrate exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

What should I discuss with my health care provider before taking citric acid and sodium citrate?

Before taking citric acid and sodium citrate, tell your doctor if you have:

• kidney disease;

• high blood pressure or a restricted sodium diet;

• Addison"s disease,

• liver disease; or

• edema or swelling of the legs or ankles;

• lung disease; or

• heart disease.

How should I take citric acid and sodium citrate?

Take citric acid and sodium citrate exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

Dilute citric acid and sodium citrate in 6 ounces of water before drinking to help prevent an upset stomach. Drink another glass of water after taking the medication.

Citric acid and sodium citrate can be chilled in order to better the taste, however, do not freeze the medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose however, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I overdose?

Symptoms of a citric acid and sodium citrate overdose may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and seizures.

What should I avoid while taking citric acid and sodium citrate?

Citric acid and sodium citrate contains sodium. If you are on a sodium restricted diet or have high blood pressure talk to your health care professional before taking citric acid and sodium citrate.

Citric acid and sodium citrate side effects

• an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; hives);

• wheezing or shortness of breath;

• an unusually slow or irregular heartbeat;

• swelling of the feet and lower legs;

• leg pain or cramping;

• sudden weight gain (more than 2 pounds in one day or 5 pounds in one week);

• chest (heart) pain;

• tremor or muscle twitching

• severe diarrhea or stomach pain

If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue taking citric acid and sodium citrate and talk to your doctor:

• stomach ache;

• diarrhea, constipation, gas; or

• nausea, or vomiting.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs will affect citric acid and sodium citrate?

Before taking citric acid and sodium citrate, tell your doctor if you are taking:

• ammonium chloride;

• quinidine;

• amphetamine and dextroamphetamine (Adderall);

• antacids (especially those containing aluminum hydroxide or calcium carbonate);

• aspirin or aspirin-like drugs used for pain relief (salicylates, NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen))

• methenamine;

• antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin);

• ephedrine or pseudoephedrine;

• tetracycline;

• heart medicines;

• anole antifungal (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole);

• chlorpropamide;

• diet medicines; or

• lithium (Lithobid).

You may not be able to take citric acid and sodium citrate, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment.
