Colestid Granules

Generic Name: Colestipol Granules (koe-LES-ti-pol)
Brand Name: Colestid

Colestid Granules is used for:

Lowering blood cholesterol levels. It is used along with changes in diet.

Colestid Granules is a bile acid sequestrant/anion-exchange resin. It works by increasing the removal of bile acids from the body. As the body loses bile acids, it replaces them by converting cholesterol from the blood to bile acids. This causes the blood level of cholesterol to decrease.

Do NOT use Colestid Granules if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Colestid Granules
  • you have an obstruction of your biliary tract, bile drainage problems, impacted feces, high blood chloride levels, or certain types of elevated blood lipid levels (type III, IV, or V hyperlipidemia)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Colestid Granules:

Some medical conditions may interact with Colestid Granules. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have heart disease, constipation, a blood disease, high blood levels of triglycerides, a clotting disorder, poor absorption from the intestinal tract or other intestinal problems, kidney problems, or phenylketonuria (PKU)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Colestid Granules. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol) or digitoxin because their effectiveness may be altered by Colestid Granules
  • Chlorothiazide, furosemide, gemfibrozil, hydrochlorothiazide, oral hydrocortisone, oral phosphate supplements, penicillin, or tetracycline because their effectiveness may be decreased by Colestid Granules

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Colestid Granules may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Colestid Granules:

Use Colestid Granules as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Colestid Granules is taken by mouth, usually before or with meals.
  • Digoxin and Colestid Granules should be taken as far apart as possible.
  • Corticosteroids (eg, hydrocortisone) and diuretics (eg, chlorothiazide, furosemide) should be taken 2 to 3 hours before this medicine.
  • All other medicines should be taken at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after taking Colestid Granules.
  • Do not take Colestid Granules in its dry form. Always mix with water or other fluids before taking.
  • If you are taking Colestid Granules with a beverage, add the prescribed amount of medicine to 3 to 6 ounces of liquid before taking. Stir until well mixed (it will not dissolve) before drinking. After drinking all the liquid, rinse the glass with more liquid and drink it to ensure that all medicine is taken.
  • Colestid Granules may also be taken with milk in hot or cold breakfast cereals, or mixed with soups (chicken noodle, tomato) or fruits (applesauce, peaches, crushed pineapple, pears, fruit cocktail) containing plenty of fluid.
  • Drink several full glasses of water or other liquid (8 oz/240 mL) daily, unless directed otherwise by your doctor.
  • If you miss a dose of Colestid Granules, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Colestid Granules.
