Cleocin-T Lotion

Generic Name: Clindamycin Topical Lotion (klin-da-MYE-sin)
Brand Name: Examples include ClindaMax and Cleocin-T

Cleocin-T Lotion is used for:

Treating severe acne. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Cleocin-T Lotion is a topical lincomycin antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria that cause acne and by reducing the amount of free fatty acids that irritate the skin surface.

Do NOT use Cleocin-T Lotion if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Cleocin-T Lotion or to lincomycin
  • you have Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, or colitis associated with antibiotics

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Cleocin-T Lotion:

Some medical conditions may interact with Cleocin-T Lotion. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have gastrointestinal (bowel) disease or diarrhea

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Cleocin-T Lotion. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Nondepolarizing muscle relaxants (eg, vecuronium) or succinylcholine because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
  • Erythromycin because the effectiveness of Cleocin-T Lotion may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Cleocin-T Lotion may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Cleocin-T Lotion:

Use Cleocin-T Lotion as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Cleocin-T Lotion is for topical use on the skin only.
  • Shake well before use. Clean and dry the affected area. Cover the affected area and surrounding areas with a thin film of medicine.
  • Cleocin-T Lotion works best if it is used at the same time each day.
  • To clear up your infection completely, continue using Cleocin-T Lotion for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days.
  • If you miss a dose of Cleocin-T Lotion, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Cleocin-T Lotion.

Important safety information:

  • Cleocin-T Lotion may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone you know may have taken Cleocin-T Lotion by mouth, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Cleocin-T Lotion is for external use only. Do not get Cleocin-T Lotion in your eyes or on the inside of your nose or mouth. If you accidentally get the medicine in your eye, immediately flush with a large amount of cool tap water.
  • Cleocin-T Lotion has an unpleasant taste. Use caution when applying Cleocin-T Lotion around the mouth.
  • If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools occurs, contact your doctor at once. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor.
  • It is important to use Cleocin-T Lotion for the full course of treatment. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of this treatment and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Cleocin-T Lotion and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
  • Several weeks may pass before you see improvement in your acne. Continue using Cleocin-T Lotion for the full time recommended by your doctor.
  • Do not use other medicines or cleaners on your face unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
  • Cleocin-T Lotion is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 12 years of age; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Cleocin-T Lotion during pregnancy. It is unknown if Cleocin-T Lotion is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Cleocin-T Lotion.
